| 79 Manawatu - Isles Construction Second generation takes charge T T Sue Russell Isles Construction does a lot of work for clients such as the Ministry of Education, New Zealand Defence Force and Kaianga Ora agencies. BUILDING Founded in 1975 by Bob and Desma Isles, Palmerston North company Isles Construction has grown to a second generation with their children Tarsha, Carmen and Cameron now in charge of the day to day operation of the business. The business has evolved including opening a branch in Christchurch in 2014, enabling involvement in the massive rebuild of the city following the 2011 earthquakes. One director is based in Christchurch and the bulk of the company’s work stems from long-standing engagement with clients such as the Ministry of Education, New Zealand Defence Force and Kaianga Ora agencies. “We do take on some private work for selected clients, but by far our work involves working in these sectors. “Having undertaken these kinds of projects has secured ongoing work for us, even at times when those working in other building forms may have struggled at times.” As with many construction companies Contracts Manager Bronwyn Bolt says material supply chain challenges were beginning to impact, however at the size and scale the business operates at, cushioning from being able to plan well in advance, buy in and store materials were easing the challenges. “We have been looking at material substitution as an option to keep projects moving forward.” The ability to shift staff around is another positive at this time. Bronwyn says Social Housing is a real growth sector at this time. “We have been quite surprised at the need locally for housing and have completed about 90 houses for Kaianga Ora in Palmerston North, Levin, Feilding and Marton.” Having been established for over 45 years Isles Construction has established long standing relationships with local architects, engineers, subcontractors and clients meaning a number of contracts over a number years for organisations such as Cornerstone Christian School. Asked about employment opportunities Bronwyn describes qualified carpenters as ‘Unicorn’s – they don’t exist. “We would take on more qualified staff if they could be found, so we have a commitment to train up apprentices. “At one point we had 13 apprentices at various stages of training.” The company also places a strong emphasis on professional development and internal promotion. Two staff are currently working on their construction management diplomas through UCOL. Solid staff retention is important, especially at this time of high demand for services. Isles Construction takes on projects up to approx. $15million. Isles Construction Ltd has many years’ experience working on commercial projects in the Manawatu and Lower North Island. Major clients include the NZ Police, NZ Defence Force, Ministry of Justice, Department of Corrections, NZ Fire Service, Ministry of Social Development and the Ministry of Education as well as private clients such as KJC Developments and Wallace Developments. The company has also completed seismic strengthening projects for the Ministry of Education, NZ Fire Service and Manawatu District Council and is currently undertaking work on the Bryant Building in Palmerston North. Asked what the success of the company really comes down to Bronwyn says it’s family owned origins and a commitment to support local people and local businesses has been really important. “We are very Manawatu focused and as a result enjoy a lot of repeat business.” Plumbing • Drainage • Gas • Mechanical Services Your local commercial plumbing & drainage contractors with over 100 years of experience.
