Business stands the test of time Key construction partner in the Wairarapa region, Holmes Construction is leaning on its long-established relationships to help navigate its way through these uncertain times. Family business Holmes Construction has a proud history dating back to 1957, growing from a reputable Wairarapa building business into the Wellington market, and now with the third generation of the Holmes family running the firm. “As a family and a business, we’ve seen it all before,” says Holmes Construction managing director Ben Holmes. “The past two years have been unbelievably busy and buoyant, even through the lockdowns and the Covid restrictions. Every time after a lockdown, the market has boomed, but what we’re currently experiencing for the first time since Covid hit, is we’re starting to hear and see some signs of things slowing down. “We are still busy with enquiry but for the first time in a long time, we’re experiencing people saying ‘I’ll wait and see what happens with Covid, and with materials and labour shortages.” As a long-standing commercial builder in the Wairarapa and Wellington region, Holmes Construction has a good amount of forward work and feels lucky to have retained a massive percentage of its planned projects and its labour force. “We work for a lot of Government agencies which hopefully for us, future proofs our business.” The Holmes team is trusted by multiple government agency clients to deliver in complex, operational sites where stringent safety protocols and a strong understanding of stakeholder needs is critical for project success. The firm’s track record in this area extends from hospital sites to schools and on these projects, Holmes Construction provides highly competent project management and delivery, including working with specialist subcontractors to safely address multiple hazards. “Our relationships with key clients such as these, and key consultants and key suppliers are what helps us through these times. Because we’ve got contacts and long-established relationships, we get looked after well, and for all these reasons, we are in a good position. Having said that, we’ve got one eye on the future and what’s coming …” The Wairarapa is experiencing massive population growth and Ben says it has been a good time for all industries in the region, and certainly for construction. Holmes Construction is currently building a new Four-Square supermarket in Martinborough for key clients and fourth-generation owners Conor and Philippa Kershaw, a tourism development for Te Kairanga through Foley Wines also in Martinborough, where a new barrel haul, gin distillery, tasting room, and restaurant are under construction. In Greytown, Holmes Construction is one year into the build of retirement community The Orchards. This large, 175-unit complex including residential care facilities will keep Holmes Construction on site for another four to five years. Holmes Construction is also working through multiple large Ministry of Education projects throughout the Wairarapa. • Newhouse plumbing large or small • Enviro septic tanks and rainwater schemes • Drain laying and repairs &maintenance 027 2900 518 malneek_plumbing@yahoo.co.nz Malneek Plumbing 21 VILLA STREET MASTERTON Office phone: 06 370 3200 Email: verlaff@xtra.co.nz • P.O Box 202 Proud to support Holmes Construction Group Ltd
