Multi-disciplinary company of consulting engineers, planners and surveyors, Bloxam, Burnett & Olliver (BBO), has just launched a career pathway programme, which BBO planning project manager Chris Dawson says will help employees to reach their potential and goals. “We like to recognise staff, their skills and experience. The career pathway programme enables staff to know how to move from where they are to where they want to go in their career,” he says. The programme is the result of the huge growth of the company over recent years, which has seen staff numbers double and a new office open in Tauranga in 2020 to complement the Hamilton office. The programme works alongside BBO’s focus on continual improvement and up-skilling, which sees it also pay for staff professional development courses and membership at officially recognised professional bodies such as the New Zealand Planning Institute and the Institute of Professional Engineers New Zealand. Having worked at BBO for around 20 years, Chris says the company culture is unique and facilitates abundant growth and opportunities. “We’re small enough to care but large enough to be involved in some really interesting projects,” he says. “For example at the moment our team is working on the Ruakura Inland Port and Logistics Hub and the Tauranga Northern Link.” He cites the family team environment and flexible working conditions as draw cards for many employees. “Depending on the position, people can complete their hours in a flexible way including working some of those hours from home if they desire. “It’s a collaborative environment. We operate a very flat structure and an open door policy so if an employee, or client, wants to speak to the managing director they can.” He says it’s an environment where innovation is encouraged. “BBO is owned by senior staff and managed by five directors so we are small and nimble enough to allow for people to think laterally and come up with creative solutions. “In fact it’s one of our strong points as a company and a reason clients come to us. We encourage staff to get invested in what they’re doing, be committed and engaged. There is a real sense of pride and passion with people putting in 100%.” He says that BBO values the importance of a work-life balance and the Hamilton office, for example, has a corporate rate at a nearby gym for staff. People interested in specific sports often get together outside work to have fun, for example road cycling, mountain biking and football. “We recognise there is more to life than just going to work so we actively encourage balance. “Our people often like to hang out together outside work so this also further strengthens our collaborative culture in the workplace.” BBO provides consultancy services in the fields of civil and structural engineering, planning, surveying, contract procurement and related disciplines. “We are proud to have built a reputation for providing cost effective, innovative and practical solutions to complex problems for our clients. “With the diverse and interesting challenges our clients present us with, we encourage both specialist skill sets and well-rounded generalists, and have the flexibility to create new positions to ensure first class outcomes. “There are currently opportunities to join the BBO team and we are actively looking to fill a number of positions. “If BBO sounds like a good fit for you, we’d like to hear from you.” “The career pathway programme enables staff to know how to move from where they are to where they want to go in their career.” BBO provides consultancy services in the fields of civil and structural engineering, planning, surveying, contract procurement and related disciplines.
