General Manager, Daniel Lincoln, says compared with some businesses and particularly those rurally based, they got off very lightly, with only minimal disruption to day to day business. Ramage Sheetmetals has been operating since the 1940’s and is Napier’s largest Sheetmetal Engineering business. Employing sixteen in total, four in the office, and located at Onekawa, Daniel says things had got a little quiet after Christmas. “We have enough work to keep the team engaged as we offer a wide range of services to support many industries.” These services include full design and build projects of any size using Solid Works 3D software, contract manufacturing, and one-off custom work, Turret punching, CNC folding as well as consultancy on projects and clients design. The well-equipped workshop has been boosted with the purchase of a new Trumpf 5030 Laser Cutter with a Bed measuring 3m x 1.5m, able to cut up to 32mm Plate. “We went over to Germany to see it in action. It’s an amazing machine and can operate completely independently of human input. It could even run with the workshop lights out!” Maintaining the costly equipment is a priority as well as replacing with latest-edge technologies, as circumstances allow. “We have another Trumpf Press Brake coming in from Germany which will be arriving soon,” says . “We place a priority on our workshop machines because of our high standards of workmanship and a responsibility to always provide top quality service and products to our loyal customers.” Last year Ramage Sheetmetals undertook a substantial project, the re-manufacture of dryer components for a large pulp mill in the North Island. Daniel says, the clients approached him, not really knowing where to go. “The project was just too large for their current supplier and we engaged them with samples and design suggestions. “A design was finally agreed on with input rom around the world and the project went ahead. We processed over 45 ton of sheetmetal through our site and delivered it to site well within our timeline. The clients were very impressed.” Another service within the company is ‘Rapid Laser’ born out of a desire to reduce substantially waiting times for customers wanting precision laser work undertaken. “In our mind waiting up to two weeks for laser cutting was unacceptable and it was pushing out lead time on our work, so we decided to purchase our own high power laser.” Ramage Sheetmetals 6kw CO2 Trumpf Laser is capable of processing 25mm mild steel, 25mm stainless steel and 20mm aluminium. “The biggest gain for us in purchasing this was in the actual time it takes the machine to travel and laser cut. It’s meant we’ve been able to process more work in a day. Customers often now wait for their jobs to be cut, or email through an order and head over to pick up the cut product,” says Daniel. To order through Rapid Laser a customer doesn’t need to be local. Any product lasered can be shipped nationwide using the Toll online track and trace software, or for smaller jobs delivered using couriers.
