Since its inception 30 years ago, Rocktec, part of the 100% New Zealand-owned Auckland-based bulk-handling company Skookum Technology, has been a key player in the New Zealand quarrying industry. The company has an expansive list of locally designed and built materials handling plants and equipment which includes fixed and portable crushing and screening plants, apron feeders, screens, conveyors and continuous mixing plants. Rocktec is also an agent for a number of leading global brands, including Terex jaw and cone crushers, screens and feeders, and the ESS conveyor belt-cleaning system, which includes impact beds, sealing systems and air cannons. Then there’s the MEKA agency offering crushers, screens and aggregate processing, and the Bibko ready-mix cycling machines which clean and recycle water, aggregate and sand back into production rather than ending up in a landfill. The product line is backed up by a staff of 17 which includes no fewer than five engineers offering a complete design and build facility. “There’s generally no such thing in the industries we service as a one-size-fits-all solution, and it’s our attention to engineering detail that sets us apart from other businesses in the field,” Rocktec general manager Gary Brown says. “Our designs are produced using computerised programmes that include 3D modelling, and we’re particularly attentive to identifying areas liable to extreme wear, treating these as potential problems that have to be eliminated. “This focus on reduced maintenance has a direct positive effect on clients’ operational profit, with the added benefits of easy access for maintenance and extended working life.” Rocktec’s Matamata factory delivers not only large-scale projects but also designs and builds a line of environmentally-friendly Warrior-branded under-body truck-wash units, along with its Avalanche brand of inclined screens for quarrying and mining. “We’re very proud of being a Matamata company, and while our business is looking out at the wider world, at home we focus very much on the local and community side, not just in bringing work and supporting community initiatives, but also in bringing industry-leading technology in the mining sector to the town,” Gary says. The Warrior wheel and under-body wash is designed and built at the Matamata plant, and prevents trucks carrying mud and debris off-site onto public roads. The units are 4m in length and contain 88 pressure water-jets arranged to give an intensive spray pattern to the automated drive-through system which is triggered by an electric sensor when the truck passes it. Quarrying, concreting, construction and chemical plant sites around the country are serviced by the fully galvanised wheel-wash which can be installed in fixed or mobile mode. New products recently introduced under the Warrior brand include a range of knobbly track-out control mats that minimise sediment and debris which might otherwise be tracked onto the public roading system. These are made of durable HDPE and provide a re-usable site entrance system laid over dirt or asphalt that can be deployed in half an hour. Ground protection mats are also available to reduce damage to grassed and other fragile surfaces from high and heavy traffic wear.
