DEVELOPMENT Fiso Group: Talima Estate High quality education, high quality housing and high quality healthcare for everyone is the vision of Fiso Group for its various projects and investments in Whitby and surrounds. The group has become champions for the region and has shown that with a focus on education great things are possible. The Fiso Group has taken a community and family focused approach to its investments, which include subsidiaries Pacific Health Plus, a healthcare practice with clinics in Kāpiti and Cannons Creek; Whitby Collegiate, an independent co-educational school for students in Years 7-13, and a retreat in Waikanae called Talima Lodge. Its latest venture is Talima Estate, with plans to house up to 120 residential lots plus a pocket park and a stormwater detention reserve. Fiso Group trustee, John Fiso, says that Talima Estate – named after his late mother Auvaa Iemaima Talima Fiso – is an extension of the Trust’s operations in the area. The family’s background provides further insight into what led to the development. John’s parents moved to New Zealand from the Samoan islands in the fifties seeking a better life. His mother was a schoolteacher in the islands but her qualifications were not recognised in New Zealand, which saw her working as a cleaner and various other jobs, while his father worked as a freezing worker. There was always a firm focus on providing a great education for their eight children and six eventually went to university with many going on to become role models for their community after graduation. John says his educations and values based upbringing allowed him to eventually build his own investment group and Talima Estate is one result. Built over two stages, lots will vary generally between 400sqm and 900sqm for standard lots but there are also several larger lots, which either back onto steeper areas or provide a transition between standard residential lots and the larger lots of Pacific View where the Whitby Landscape Protection Area Overlay exists. John says it is the last piece of significant piece of real estate in Whitby and the Trust is taking a family focused approach. “We are not trying to get the greatest yield off the land,” explains John. “We want to deliver a development we can be proud of. That’s why we are putting in amenities that Whitby needs, such as a café, hairdresser and maybe a health centre. We’re trying to build communities.” He says the aim has been to deliver an integrated model offering high quality individual homes that help to enhance the area and where families can live great lives. John says great community spirit exists in Whitby and the Trust hopes that Talima Estate will add to this. Strong covenants help to protect people’s investment.
