The Round House (a 12 sided shaped home or a dodecagon) is located on the hills of Waikanae amongst bush at the back and takes in panoramic views from windows on each side at the front looking out across the township, the beach, and the outstanding Kāpiti Island. “The view from up there is absolutely amazing,” says Cameron Builders owner Duane Cameron. “Every room has a slightly different view because it’s on a slightly different angle.” It is these angles and the high level and quality of finishing which brought complexity to this project for Cameron Builders. “Yes it’s technical, but it’s also small at 135sqm. A lot of angles means a lot of labour, but we’ve been doing high end homes since we began building and this is no different. It’s what we are passionate about doing.” Duane’s client James Davis took inspiration for his dream home from his uncle’s octagonal house in Wānaka, where he spent time in the school holidays. Clad in western red cedar with black aluminium joinery, the material palette is simple yet beautiful. The windows are enclosed by subtle yet striking vertical cedar rain screens that run the height of the top floor, and the entry porch is recessed and sheltered by a double-height ceiling featuring birch plywood with negative detailing. Coming through the front door into a light, transparent, and open living space, the surrounding landscape reappears, framed by large windows and sliding doors. Duane says the end result is a warm and inviting home which has been beautifully designed and executed and sits perfectly on its square section, all gorgeously landscaped by James during the process of the build. James says the build was a thrilling experience and he was happy to be as involved as he was in it. “Cameron Builders helped to produce a beautiful, unique build with high-quality finishing, and I couldn’t be happier.” Duane enjoyed his Grand Designs NZ experience, saying the production team was great to deal with and it was professional and seamless from start to finish. Duane took over Cameron Builders from his dad Brian Cameron in 2008. As a builder’s son he has been around the building industry since he was two years old. Brian passed onto Duane his passion for keeping ahead of industry trends while never compromising on quality of product and finishing touches. “We measure the success of all of our projects by the level of quality and the happiness of the client. We could have the highest quality in the world but if we ran our jobs poorly, it wouldn’t be a positive experience for the client.” This has been more challenging than usual to achieve in the past couple of years post Covid. The understandable resulting supply chain issues, which are almost completely resolved now, are being replaced by time off the building site for any trades or suppliers with Covid, and this can throw scheduling out the window. “We try to be even more mindful than ever of potential project delays in this current climate, without wishing them on ourselves, and from the outset we clearly explain this to the clients. You are better to plan for the worst while hoping for the best.” Duane now has far more regular client ‘catch ups’ to communicate progress and any roadblocks to the clients. “It is all about building and maintaining robust builder/client relationships with Cameron Builders. Now more than ever this is a true core value of our business.”
