The hydrogen is then compressed and stored onsite before being dispensed into heavy vehicles.” T T to page 44 REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT The first green hydrogen truck refuelling stations are about to open, the start of a new network for New Zealand and one of the first in the world. “It’s all about future proofing our exports by enabling zero emission road transport of goods from our regions to our ports and cities,” says Hiringa Energy head of new business Ryan McDonald. “While the price of hydrogen and new hydrogen trucks are higher than a diesel truck this will come down quickly over the next few years. The global forecast is that by 2030 it will cost more to run a diesel than a hydrogen fuel cell powered truck. Hyundai, Hyzon Motors and local Christchurch company GBV all have hydrogen powered products ready for the New Zealand market.” Hiringa is building green hydrogen production and refuelling infrastructure across New Zealand and Australia. The refuelling stations provide coverage for the key heavy freight routes and are powered by renewable electricity. In New Zealand Hiringa is undertaking the network in partnership with Waitomo. Three stations will be opening in late April at Wiri in Auckland, Te Rapa in Hamilton and Palmerston North. A fourth station at Tauriko in Tauranga is underway as part of SH29 upgrades. Hydrogen equipment will enable green hydrogen to be produced on the sites. “The hydrogen is made on site by using renewable electricity to split water into hydrogen and oxygen through a process called electrolysis. The hydrogen is then compressed and stored onsite before being dispensed into heavy vehicles,” explains Ryan. He says the network will provide an affordable and reliable source of hydrogen for multiCAPABILITIES: ° Project Management ° Project Planning ° O Site Fabrication ° Pipeline Construction ° Equipment Manufacture ° Piping & Equipment Installation ° Mechanical Maintenance ° Industrial Coatings ° Testing p. + 64 6 755 9236 www.energyworks.net.nz Fabrication, Construction & Maintenance
