The venture has been possible with government support and through a partnership with truck and trailer lease and rental business TR Group, which has agreed to purchase and onlease 20 hydrogen fuel cell trucks with the fuel included in the lease. Ryan says the advantages of hydrogen for zero emission transport are clear for the heavy transport sector citing ultra fast fuelling and the ability to carry comparable payload to diesel trucks as the key value proposition. “We are talking a 15 minute refuel on a truck such as the one that NZ Post has been operating out of Auckland, giving it 350-400km of range,” he says. While the technology is ideal for larger payload vehicles Ryan says industry will use it in conjunction with battery electric vehicles, which are ideal for smaller trucks used in more urban areas or where charging time is not a factor. Hiringa Energy was started in 2017 by group of energy professionals: Andrew and Catherine Clennett and Matt Carnachan and Dan Kahn. The approach has been embodied by the concept of Hiringa, a Māori word meaning inspiration, determination, energy, perseverance and vitality. Future plans include 24 stations by 2028 and further locations have been earmarked. Hiringa is also part of the New Zealand Hydrogen Aviation Consortium, which aims to lay the groundwork for the effective deployment of green hydrogen powered aviation and to transition New Zealand’s airports into hydrogen hubs serving both aviation and non-aviation users. One exciting project is a strategic alliance agreement with Air New Zealand to make a zero emission hydrogen aircraft a possibility in New Zealand this decade. Another involves the construction of four new wind turbines in Taranaki to supply green hydrogen and renewable electricity directly to Ballance’s Kapuni site in South Taranaki. A third is the development of a green hydrogen to ammonia fertiliser plant in New South Wales Australia, in partnership with Sundown Pastoral, a provider of premium net zero cotton to the worlds high fashion houses. Ryan says hydrogen fuel could be a game changer for New Zealand: “New Zealand has great renewables – wind and water - so if we do this correctly we won’t be at the whims of the international fuel market and will be able to produce all our own low carbon transport fuels here in New Zealand. This is particularly important for our exporters. Also once we switch from diesel to green hydrogen, this money effectively stays in New Zealand, unlocking investment in more infrastructure and renewables for New Zealanders. Our vision is that zero emission hydrogen will enable sustainable, thriving communities.” In New Zealand Hiringa is undertaking the hydrogen network in partnership with Waitomo.
