The Palmerston North based company has been in the business for over 113 years in several different locations and formats and specialises in the design and manufacture of gantry cranes, lifting equipment and pressure vessels for large industrial applications. Administration manager Shane Halligan says the majority of their work is manufacturing a diverse range of cranes and pressure vessels along with maintaining, upgrading and repairing all lifting equipment brands. “There’s a lot of extra work associated with cranes such as manufacturing lifting beams and we use the best quality crane components available. A crane will last 25 plus years so we are upgrading these as needed. Gantry cranes are manufactured to be part of a building and we will maintain and upgrade these on location.” “We have an inhouse design team and comprehensive fabrication equipment that provides our customers with unlimited capabilities, from small jobbing to large contract on site work. We have a service team that responds to break downs and we can upgrade the mechanical and electrical components of an existing crane to improve reliability and safety,” says Shane. JJ Niven is also known for the design and fabrication of carbon steel pressure vessels to PECPR regulations. Vessels range from 356mm to 2300mm diameter and are used in many industrial applications such as the dairy, petro chemical, waste water and compressed air industries. “We typically sell a specific tank to compressed air companies that manufacture and sell air compressors and air treatment products.” Pressure vessels are built to AS1210 or BS5169 codes and are third-party inspected to ensure compliance with the relevant standard. Inspections cover the vessel design, materials, fabrication, testing and documentation. The Palmerston North workshop has over 2000 square metres of covered workshop space equipped with six gantry cranes and monorails to provide a flexible workspace for multiple and dissimilar projects in simultaneous production. Machine shop services include electroplating repairs, CNC jobbing and production lathes and mills which are quickly and easily programmed. In-house design engineers utilise 3D CAD facilities with simulation software and are complemented by specialist contractors as required. The highly experienced workforce can turn their hand to a variety of applications to provide a turnkey solution from concept design to site installation. A recent contract with KiwiRail involved the design, manufacture and installation of a traverser for moving locomotives and wagons into the assembly workshop in Dunedin. The 23.2 metre, 65 tonne moving structure, is rated to move 130 tonnes, has two cabins at either end for driving and was fully designed and constructed in the Palmerston North workshop. “We have in house mechanical and electrical specialists allowing full control over the design and quality. The traverser is semi-automated and KiwiRail staff are very happy with the ease of use.” At present JJ Niven are completing surge tanks for a water treatment plants in Kapiti and manufacturing stainless steel pipework for a local power generation company and designing and manufacturing two 100t cranes for KiwiRail Hutt workshops and two 101.6 / 12.5t station cranes for a power generation company. The company’s central location in Palmerston North is ideal for contracts around the North Island and while they can be competitive in the South Island, there are increased costs to freight, install and commission equipment. “That saying, we have just supplied and installed cranes in Invercargill and Whangarei and anything is possible.” JJ Niven engineering Ltd are the Official Partner for SWF Kranetechnik of Germany and we have a long history with brands such, Demag, Hitachi, Kito, Nitchi and other lifting equipment.
