Under the stewardship of sole director Matthew Argyle, Studio BBA upholds the decades long legacy established by its founder, Bruce Barry, delivering unparalleled architectural services that embody quality and value throughout Palmerston North and the wider Manawatu region. “I became a partner in Bruce Barry Architects in 2016 and upon Barry’s retirement in 2018, I became sole owner and director,” says Matthew. Studio BBA collaborates closely with clients, offering tailor-made solutions that enhance the intrinsic value of each project. Comprising a team of four adept architectural designers, including Matthew, Karen, Steffi, and Anna - Studio BBA combines diverse expertise to craft innovative architectural solutions that resonate with clients’ visions and aspirations. Treating the design process as a team effort, Studio BBA work alongside clients to design new homes, lifestyle homes, executive homes and townhouse developments. With a commitment to maximising value without compromising on quality, Studio BBA navigates the design process with meticulous attention to detail, ensuring that every aspect aligns seamlessly with clients’ preferences and budget. Drawing upon years of experience and expertise, Matthew brings a wealth of knowledge to Studio BBA, having honed his craft since graduating with honours from Victoria University. “Following on from that, I spent three years working in Wellington for Cranko Architects before returning to Palmerston North where I worked for Proarch Architects, on mostly commercial projects, before partnering with Bruce Barry and now we’re Studio BBA.’’ With Palmerston North’s population projected to grow by 23,400 to 110,700 by 2043, driven by the relative affordability the district offers and its relaxed lifestyle, Studio BBA remains at the forefront of architectural innovation. “Traditionally the Manawatu is perceived as having a conservative architectural style and while that remains the case mostly, we’re certainly seeing more variety and individuality in the homes people are wanting now,” says Matthew. Studio BBA’s residential portfolio exemplifies a diverse range of style and function with each new homes as unique as the owner themselves. Whether revitalising historic cottages or conceptualising avant-garde residences, Studio BBA’s designs transcend conventional boundaries, breathing new life into every project they undertake. Most recently, this included the renovation and extension of an original 1890’s workers cottage within Palmerston North. “It had several previous renovations which hadn’t moved it forward any, in a design sense, so we added an 8 sq. metre extension to the rear of the 120 sq. metre home and added private outdoor space,” says Matthew, “modernising the interior whilst retaining its character.’’ In a new build design, Studio BBA has created a modern villa lifestyle property within the Manawatu and included in the site plan is a new shed and stables for horses. Driven by a commitment to sustainability and building efficiencies Studio BBA advocates for high-performing homes that integrate passive design principles and innovative building systems. They welcome walk-in enquiries and their design studio is located at 263 Ruahine Street, Palmerston North.
