Lobell Construction BUILDING Executive Assistant at Hamilton-based Lobell Construction, Toni-Leigh Shaw, says the company is in good heart, having been in business 41 years. “It’s been challenging but I have enjoyed the challenges,” says Toni-Leigh who takes care of much of the background administration, handling of project documentation, development of systems manuals and some accounting work as well. Formerly Lue Shaw Builders the company lives and breathes its founding principles in its daily activities and, as such, has evolved an enviable reputation, while being involved with building a wide array of signficant projects in and around the Waikato. Today, the company is led by Managing Director Louise Shaw, Ellyse Meredith-Wilkie Director/QS, and Toni-Leigh. Louise and Ellyse are the second generation, taking over the business from father Lue Shaw. The company focusses on commercial construction, warehousing, school work, hospital projects along with some residential work as well. As such, Lobell Construction is very much a business that has helped shape Hamilton and surrounds. Over the years the nature of projects Lobell Construction has been engaged in have become larger, raising the standards benchmark again, placing the company’s projects outside the reach of manh of its former competitors. Beyond Hamilton itself, Lobell Construction has a presence in other major Waikato centres such as Cambridge and Te Awamutu and engages a team of about 35 staff. Asked about some current projects across the desk, Toni-Leigh says renovations at Hamilton’s Bankwood School along with a new Wellness Centre in Enderley Hamilton were occupying the team. “We have a long history working in medical facility construction. It’s one of our specialty sectors.” It is common, at any one time, for three or four projects at various stages of completion to be underway. Commercial construction of the scale and nature of those that Lobell Construction undertakes, by their nature, are long term projects. “One of our key strengths is that we get involved early on, so there is plenty of client engagement long before groundwork gets underway.” Toni-Leigh says one of Lobell Construction’s key strengths is their longewitvity in the market. “The trust has been established and we have a good dedicated team to see jobs through. I think being family-owned also impacts on who we are and how we work. We’re not a corporate but rather a medium size business which is nimble and a good size to be.” Other projects Lobell Construction has undertaken include the Canoe Racing headquarters at Lake Karapiro, Radius Glaisdale residential care facility in Flagstaff Hamilton, a new toilet and show block at Raglan’s Ngaranuhi Beach. Toni-Leigh describes business as ‘steady’ at the moment. “We have been around long enough to see the cyclical nature of the commercial construction sector and we know our reputation speaks for itself.
