PAGE 14 A Porirua-based building firm is finding unique ways to set itself apart. Tim Lucas Construction (TLC), owned by husband-and-wife team Tim and Kerstin Lucas, has been operating in the greater Wellington area for 12 years The company is a residential building company and had been mainly in new builds, but the market has changed in recent times with a lot of homeowners choosing to do projects on their existing homes, she said. “We are now focused more on renovations and extensions.” Currently underway is a large extension on a tight street in Johnsonville and an extension to a house on a steep slope in Plimmerton. TLC have expertise in working on steep sites, challenging extensions, high end builds and character homes. They hold the Wellington license for Heritage Homes. A national building company that specializes in recreating buildings from pioneer cottages to an 1860 villa and ornate 1910 villa, through to classic retro bungalows of the 1920s, 1930s and 1940s. This gave the company a point of difference and allowed Tim to lean into his craft and focus of the detail in a build, Kerstin said. “It’s definitely a niche in the market. We’ve built these homes throughout Wellington and the Wairarapa and have also restored period homes.” Highlights have been designing and building a stunning corner villa in Martinborough. “It was a late 1800s replica villa that oozes street appeal, with two bay windows and generous wrap around verandahs. “It was a joy to build as the clients were very focused, so every little detail was considered, from a decorative archway and wainscoting paneling in the hall, to Boiserie paneling in the master bed. There was also a full-scale renovation of a 1930s bungalow sitting in the hills of Wellington. “We worked with Vorstermans Architects to carry out an extensive high-end renovation which included a complete interior and exterior overhaul. “It was a delight to completely transform this unassuming bungalow into a sleek, modern home. The master bed was given a new, fully tiled ensuite with clean, modern fixtures.” To maximise the use of space, a wardrobe was converted into an office. “In the main living area we installed a whole new kitchen, and at the other end of the room a large steel portal was installed - giving space for an expansive picture window to make the most of the stunning views over Wellington harbour.” Kerstin said the team were keenly aware they were working with large assets and in many cases people’s life savings. So, building a relationship with the client was important, she said. “Establishing a good relationship with your client is key. As is communication throughout a project”. The new build market had become very quiet in the last year or so but there were signs it was picking up a bit, she said. For the future, the couple hope to grow the firm with ideally two more teams, but were not looking to be “massive”. The firm was hoping to take on more staff once the market picked up again. “We’re always up to talking to good people.” The firm was able to offer apprentices a great start in their career, and opportunities to become site foreman to project manager. “We’re a family company and that really matters to us. They’re not just numbers in a team.” As for her own passion for the industry, she said she enjoyed the problem-solving aspect of the work. And there was plenty of variety. “Every day is different.”
