Hodson Construction has celebrated major success at the 2025 Master Builders House of the Year Awards, taking home multiple honours for their Mt Victoria cottage renovation. The project earned Regional Gold in the Wellington & Wairarapa Renovation $500,000 – $1 million category, as well as the titles of Regional Supreme Renovation of the Year, Regional Category Winner, and a coveted place in the Top 100. Adding to its recognition, the Mt Victoria renovation also received a Wellington Architecture Award in 2025. The national Master Builders House of the Year winners will be announced in Christchurch on 22 November. Owner Jayden Hodson was thrilled and declared: “It’s great to receive recognition from our industry peers. It raises brand awareness and is an excellent way to promote our work as builders”. Wellington-based Hodson Construction is an award-winning, full-service construction company specialising in architectural renovations, alterations, extensions, and new builds. As Licensed Building Practitioners and Registered Master Builders, the business is owned and operated by Jayden and Cara Hodson. Jayden leads a skilled team of four builders, bringing more than 22 years of industry experience, including the past four years running Hodson Construction. He splits his week between three days on the tools and two days managing the business. Jayden’s wife Cara oversees the company’s accounts and marketing. AKA Architecture Ltd’s renovation design revitalised the 100-year-old Mt Victoria cottage, blending period charm with contemporary calm. The transformation respects the home’s original character while enhancing functionality. Inspired by the distinctive double-gabled roofline, the new rear addition opens into warm, skylit living areas along the southern boundary. Renovation materials include concrete floors, brick accents and profiled metal roofing, softened inside with ash timber. Concrete stairs elegantly link the cottage to its contemporary addition. The three-bedroom, two-bathroom home redefines family living while preserving heritage. Bespoke joinery, durable finishes and a calming natural palette enhance both comfort and longevity. The re-imagined cottage shows a 100-year-old home can be renewed for the 21st century. The Mount Victoria cottage renovation took nine months to complete and was a collaborative effort between the homeowners, AKA Architecture Ltd, and sub-contractor partners including Jarvis Plumbing, Gasworks & Drainage, Stuart Electrical, Evolution Windows and Doors, and SB Joinery for the kitchen and wardrobes. Jayden states: “I’ve got a great team of hard working guys. They are good all-round builders across the board”. Jayden declares: “Construction is a passion of mine. He explains: “I’m building four townhouses in Lyall Bay.” He adds: “The development includes three 84sqm, two bedroom townhouses and one 104sqm, three bedroom townhouse. Unique to the project, the living areas are upstairs to capture plenty of sun.
