Before buying the business, Jamie was franchise development manager for Totalspan’s parent company, Spanbild and prior to that had more than 15 years experience working with large national distributors in franchise and business management roles. When Totalspan Wellington came up for sale the couple saw it as a great fit, offering the potential for growth with “fresh energy”, Jamie says. “It was too good an opportunity to let slip by. It stacked up and it wasn’t too much of a jump into the unknown.” T T Russell Fredric With its office/display site in Otaki, Kapiti Coast, it is well-placed in a key growth area of the region with excellent motorway connectivity to greater Wellington, while being among a rural/semi-rural demographic which is perfect for its varied product range. “It’s quite a large area so there was a lot of upside potential in terms of the volume of work that we could do. I’ve always been big on trying to develop and foster personal relationships and solve problems and add value for people, rather than just sell a commodity; the customer service side, the relationships were big for me.” It has also been valuable to be part of a small community in which the business has been proactive in supporting organisations and initiatives. Jamie attributes its strong growth, even in the midst of a contracted building economy, to the team focusing on treating every enquiry they receive with the same level of care and personal engagement, from garden sheds and carports upwards, and to generate word of mouth referrals from a high level of customer engagement and satisfaction. “It’s making sure that whatever people need, that we’ve got a solution for and we’re taking the opportunity to put ourselves forward whenever we can,” Jamie says. “A perfect example of that is a 30 square metre single garage we built for a lady in Upper Hutt through one of our promotion campaigns; she was stoked with how that went and recently bought some commercial land, so now we are doing a 750 square metre development for her on a new greenfield site.”
