122 | BUILDING Wielinga Construction / Wise Build Quality housing Undergone huge growth Wielinga Construction exemplifies how Māori businesses are making a substantial difference in their communities both through providing job opportunities and helping whanau into new homes. “I’m from Wairoa and Ngāti Kahungunu and have seen the lack of good homes and the need for housing,” says company founder Scott Wielinga, and a Licensed Building Practitioner with 20 years’ industry experience. “It’s a goal of mine to help iwi and other developers to bring more warm, dry new homes to the region.” Scott started his Napier based business five years ago and it has quickly evolved into a comprehensive building ecosystem. The company operates alongside sister enterprises Wielinga Collective, Wielinga Steel Co and QUBE, creating an integrated network that serves both local and regional development needs. Through its modular housing division QUBE it has established a manufacturing yard in Napier with resource consent to produce transportable homes, representing a significant advancement in addressing the region’s housing shortage. The homes have been designed for a variety of uses including a home office, teen retreat or granny flat. “It’s about trying to provide the most cost effective option,” says Scott. “QUBE was born out of a mutual love of architecture, building and design and the personal experience of multi-generational co-habitating.” The company’s manufacturing approach ensures complete control over quality and timing. “QUBE controls the whole process, from plans to the manufacture of the frames and trusses right through to the production of design and construction elements.” The company’s steel framing capabilities have produced over 25,000 metres of steel frame, Wise Build has undergone huge growth since its establishment in 2020, evolving from a labour contracting operation serving a single client into a comprehensive construction company now tackling full build contracts and developing its own spec homes. The Hawke’s Bay-based firm, founded by Blake Wise with 14 years of building experience, has expanded its workforce to include two qualified carpenters and two apprentices alongside broadening its service offerings to encompass new home construction, design and build services, project management and smaller projects including decks and concrete work. “The good relationships we build with our clients sets us apart,” says Blake. “We focus on establishing that early and making sure we are always meeting their needs and communicating with them to make the building process as seamless as possible.” The company’s hands-on approach distinguishes it from larger competitors, with clients working directly with Blake throughout the building process. The company has also recently completed a single-storey duplex in Green Meadows for the same client. In recent months Wise Build has completed its first spec home at 17 Arihi Crescent, Frimley. The three-bedroom, two-bathroom property features two living areas, a double garage, timber decks, and fully tiled bathroom walls across 193 square metres on a 585-square-metre section. The house is clad in James Hardie Oblique and plaster. Blake says that Wise Build’s trajectory suggests continued expansion as it leverages its established reputation and growing capabilities to secure larger and more complex projects.
