| 23 A wealth of knowledge and experience Hardy Packaging’s journey started with Matt’s father Paul in 1986. As Taranaki’s longest established independent packaging distributor, family owned and operated Hardy Packaging’s staff have a wealth of knowledge and experience to find the right packaging solutions for its customers. “We are very much a service-based business and that is where our strength lies,” says Managing Director Matt Hardy. “We can provide a diverse product range and can make any type of company’s life easier. They can get all their packaging supplies, hygiene supplies, cafeteria supplies all in one spot. But it is also the solutions that we offer because of our vast knowledge of packaging. All of our team members have been here such long time — everybody knows the business, they care and they are innovative problem solvers, and that is a rare thing to find in business these days.” Hardy Packaging’s journey started with Matt’s father Paul in 1986 when he saw an opportunity to provide customers with a higher level of service; something that has continued as the company’s ethos. “We provide the right advice, the right service and the right product. Customers come to us, we identify their packaging requirements, advise the best way to meet those requirements, then go to the packaging manufacturers with the specifications to get the best price. We also store packaging product for local companies until it is needed if they don’t have their own storage.” While Hardy Packaging was initially focused on industrial packaging solutions, along with hygiene supplies such as paper towels and toilet rolls, the company’s customer focused attitude quickly resulted in a broader product range that included catering supplies, safety equipment and abrasive products sold into the crash repair industry. Two thirds of our business is industrial packaging and that’s our strength. Almost a third of the business is corrugated packaging and boxes, and that means we’re also selling tape, bags that might go on the boxes, pallet wrap, and labels.” Since the mid-nineties, Hardy Packaging has been part of Paklink, a cooperative encompassing a range of privately owned packaging distributors throughout the country, and providing buying power, camaraderie, networking opportunities and training. “Our office and warehouse is based in New Plymouth,” says Matt. “Our agreement with Paklink enables us to supply packaging and other products to our core customers throughout the Taranaki
