Free Range Eggs is set to dramatically expand production following a significant contract with Foodstuffs that will see its eggs stocked in every Pak’nSave, New World and Four Square across the North Island. “I plan to build another four sheds along with a feed mill and grain drying complex to grow the maize on site, dry it and make our own feed for the chickens and then use the manure for fertiliser,” explains company founder Nathan Williams. The expansion represents a significant milestone for the exclusively free range operation, which currently houses 90,000 Brown Shaver hens across multiple automated sheds on a 240-hectare site equivalent to 480 rugby fields. Nathan’s vision from the outset was to challenge conventional industry practices through complete transparency. “Most of the larger brands have colony cages, barns and a much smaller amount free range. Consumers also don’t know for sure if the eggs they buy from that brand are truly free range as the various eggs might get mixed up in the packing process. I want to lead by example in the egg industry by being solely free range so consumers can rest assured their eggs are truly free range.” The business model capitalises on technological innovation to overcome traditional free range farming challenges. The company's approach is perhaps best demonstrated through its relationship with eg. Free Range Eggs where it has constructed three sheds and a packhouse and is currently working on a fourth shed. “We worked with eg. Free Range Eggs from initial conception and design through to completion,” says Mikaela Caldow, the company's office manager and daughter of the founding directors. “It's exactly the kind of relationship that defines our business - we become part of our clients' long-term success.” What sets Caldows apart is its comprehensive in-house capabilities including building, transport services, HIAB lifting and hydrovac excavation. Over nearly 40 years the Foxton based multi-generational family business has successfully completed well over 100 projects across the lower North Island, ranging from rural farm buildings to commercial projects and civil construction works. “We are still working for a number of our original and long-term clients. That consistency comes from the fact that the person who starts on the job completes the job, ensuring continuity for both our staff and clients.” Company Director Rodney Caldow brings nearly 50 years of industry experience to his role he maintains a hands-on approach that resonates throughout the organisation. He works directly with designers, engineers, councils and clients to develop proven solutions, and is also prepared to pick up tools during critical phases like large concrete pours. Wife Brenda keeps the operation running behind-the-scenes, while son Mitchell manages the civil side, which includes more than 20 well-maintained vehicles and machinery ranging from trucks to diggers, HIABs, and hydrovacs. Staff retention speaks volumes about the company culture, with key employees having worked alongside the Caldows for up to 25 years. The workforce spans from apprentices and labourers to qualified carpenters, all united by the company's commitment to quality workmanship and safety standards. “Because we have a wide range of talent we have the ability to think outside the box and work through diverse situations to find solutions,” says Rodney. The partnership with eg. Free Range Eggs demonstrates Caldow Builders' evolution into what Rodney describes as a one-stop shop. “Working with long-term business partners, we manage projects from concept through planning and design, siteworks, transporting and erecting structural steel, concrete work and panel installation to final completion. Above all, Caldows take pride in each and every project, we don't walk away from hard jobs. Whether it's a full commercial build or a one-day dig, we show up ready to work with safety, speed and common sense.” CLIENT RELATIONSHIPS AND FAMILY VALUES ARE KEY
