T T Kelly Deeks Porirua-based Legacy Contracting has built a strong reputation in the civil contracting sector by offering clients a complete package of services – from demolition through to site works and heavy haulage – making projects simpler, smoother, and more efficient. Managing director Nick Rowell says this point of difference is proving invaluable for large contractors. “When we’re working for any of the major building firms, we can deliver both the demolition and the site works,” he says. “That means one contractor handles the whole process instead of five different subcontractors. It makes the job much easier for everyone involved.” Nick, who began his career in the industry in the early 2000s, established Legacy Contracting in 2014. Since then, the company has steadily grown into a well- respected independent operator employing more than 20 staff. Its capabilities cover civil siteworks, demolition, trenching, street lighting and traffic light poles, as well as nationwide heavy haulage. A major investment in plant and machinery has underpinned this growth. Legacy Contracting’s fleet now includes 15 Hitachi excavators ranging from 1.7 to 50 tonnes, alongside a modern fleet of transport trucks capable of carrying heavy, over- dimensional loads anywhere in New Zealand. “We’ve put a lot back into the business so we can respond quickly to clients and deliver quality outcomes on every job,” Nick says. The company has recently showcased its versatility on several landmark projects. Legacy Contracting carried out demolition and site works for the Whittaker’s chocolate factory expansion in Porirua, preparing the site for a new build on the same site. It has also worked on mining-related decommissioning projects, including the removal of underground infrastructure in Hamilton following the closure of underground mining operations in the wake of Pike River. While demolition and civil site works remain the core focus, the company also provides hydro excavation for precise trenching, small-scale drainage, and traffic infrastructure installation. Nick says this ability to adapt to demand has helped the business remain resilient. “We’re not trying to cover every service out there. We stick to what we know we can do well, and that’s how we’ve been able to build long-term client relationships.” Nick’s own story reflects the company’s grit and determination. After his former employer retired, he bought his first digger without a firm plan for work.
