34 | REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT ATI Engineering T T Kim Newth Precision: Banner tubes manufactured by ATI Engineering. Hawke’s Bay needs its local industries now more than ever, as the region slowly begins building back after being hit hard by Cyclone Gabrielle earlier this year. Hastings-based ATI Engineering is an important Hawkes Bay business with strong regional roots and a nationwide reach. “We are a leading Hawke’s Bay industrial engineering company, dedicated to design excellence, innovation, quality workmanship and efficiency,” observes Managing Director Simon Dunn, who has been with ATI Engineering since 1999. He is proud of the relationships the company has forged through the years with the region’s horticultural, transport, food and beverage enterprises. With a skilled team and a 3500sqm wellequipped workshop and offices in Hastings, ATI Engineering has proven expertise in supplying creative solutions for local producers. A core part of the business is supplying and servicing stainless steel plant into wine-making facilities, along with building plant for local companies, such as Heinz-Watties, Lowe Corporation, NZ Frost Fans, Pan Pac and Delegat Winery. “As well as manufacturing tanks for food processors and winemakers, we also specialise in precision fabrication techniques including CNC machining, orbital welding, and conveying systems for processing lines.” ATI Engineering is firmly committed to fostering talent in the region, with a big emphasis on training up the next generation of engineers and connecting with local schools through the Gateway programme. Apprentices are guided through their learning programme by Competenz, with on the job experience gained under the supervision of ATI Engineering’s workshop managers and senior staff. “I think the Gateway programme as invaluable as it gives young people opportunities to explore their options and learn about the work we do. At the same time, it gives us a chance to see what they are capable of and understand their potential.” ATI Engineering’s workshop is equipped with all the right tools of the trade for cutting/ shearing, forming and welding (orbital and general). Their engineering shop includes a precision, high-speed, four-axis CNC Milling centre and lathe that allows for the manufacture of anything from prototype products and components to identical replacement parts and repeatable production runs. “Whatever you need – whether it be machine bearings races, pump impellers, augers, sprockets, gears, rollers or other parts – we can produce it. We also specialise in the manufacture and surface grinding of mince plates and can design and prototype-test pressing and forming tools for production lines. “We work on a wide range of projects in the workshop, from small and medium-sized to large-scale projects, although we do leave larger scale structural steel to others in Hawke’s Bay who specialise in that.” ATI Engineering formed as a result of an amalgamation of Allstyle Engineering and Treeways 2000 Ltd and has enjoyed a strong track record of growth, having seized opportunities to expand capacity, capability, plant and people. Hawke’s Bay is home to many businesses that have been contributing to the regional economy for decades and ATI Engineering is proud to have forged strong relationships with many of these. One good example is Pan Pac Forest Products Ltd, which has been producing pulp in Hawke’s Bay for nearly 50 years. ATI Engineering has long had a strong focus on delivering a good service to meet Pan Pac’s engineering needs and is now part of their recovery activities following Cyclone Gabrielle. ATI Engineering is currently starting to get involved in assisting Pan Pac during the rebuild phase. ATI Engineering also continues its close relationships with the region’s many wineries, such as Delegat’s Hastings-based winery. Delegat is not only a prominent winery in Hawke’s Bay. Across New Zealand, Delegat has earned a reputation as one of the country’s best known winemakers. Established in 1947, Delegat has played a profound role in the New Zealand wine industry. ATI Engineering is proud to have been involved with the company’s Hastings winery since 2015. New Zealand Frost Fans is another local company that values ATI Engineering’s ability to think outside the square and provide cost-efficient design solutions. New Zealand Frost Fans offer comprehensive crop protection solutions with the FrostBoss range of frost-fighting equipment. The company works closely with ATI, which manufactures items such as hubs for fans, centrifugal clutches, bell housings, ancillary parts and comprehensive bolt kits.
