60 | ARCHITECTURE Emerge Architects T T Karen Phelps Firm in vanguard of region’s growth A number of projects underway or planned for Palmerston North are seeing the city rapidly grow and local architectural design practice Emerge Architecture aims to be at the forefront. “We’re a robust general practice and we’re open and interested in work from smaller jobs, such as minor renovations like moving a wall, to multi million dollar projects,” says company director Phil Stanfield. “What we work hard at is tuning in and interpreting the client’s vision, putting them and their needs first, and producing something uniquely suited to their requirements,” adds company co-director Rhys James. Established in 2005, Emerge Architecture is involved in a wide range of design projects spanning residential, commercial and industrial. It offers a full service including feasibility and design studies, construction documentation, tendering, consenting approvals and contract administration. Both Phil and Rhys are Professional Members of Architectural Designers of New Zealand (ADNZ), and are active in regional and national ADNZ events. ADNZ requires its members to abide by their code of ethics and rules for membership, as well as maintaining a programme of continuing professional development. Additionally, both Phil and Rhys are Licensed Building Practitioners (Design 2) with the Department of Housing and Building and are Professional Members of Design Association of New Zealand Inc. (DANZ). They are supported by a dedicated and experienced team of technicians and practice manager Erin Sullivan. “We have a good and long standing team with real depth of capability and experience,” says Rhys. Phil and Rhys say that Palmerston North is renowned as a distribution and logistics centre and KiwiRail’s planned Regional Freight Hub in the city will add to this reputation drawing new business and people to the region. Phil says large tracts of land have been approved for residential development due to district plan changes. Nearby Ohakea Air Force Base is also in the midst of significant investment, which has seen hundreds of families relocate to the area to undertake the development work. Construction is also underway on the Te Ahu a Turanga Manawatū Tararua Highway, which will replace the former State Highway 3 through the Manawatū Gorge, which closed in 2017 due to slips, and will improve links over the ranges to Hawkes Bay. A quick snapshot of Emerge’s current and recent projects reflects the scale of growth in the region. The company has recently completed a four two-storey townhouse development on the corner of Roy and Featherston streets in Palmerston North on an 800sqm section. Built by Mossman Construction, Phil Talk to us today, the feature profile experts Phone: 03 983 5500 waterfordpress.co.nz PROFILE YOUR PROJECT... says the development is in a prime spot in the central city and an excellent example of what the city could offer long-term, providing a lot of amenity and living space in a small area. As testament to Emerge’s high-end residential design work, it recently completed a home that backs onto Manawatu Golf Course, which won Wayne Adam Builders a Master Builders House of the Year award. Last year Emerge also worked with Fowler Homes in the Manawatu, designing a home that won a regional gold award at this year’s Master Builders House of the Year awards. The 328sqm four-bedroom home was designed to capture the views, sun, and mitigate the effects of the Manawatū wind. Situated on a lifestyle block outside Palmerston North, the house has generous living areas – something important to the owner – with a covered L-shaped outdoor entertaining space. Emerge is also working on a few projects in Foxton including a Robert Harris café building and retail honey shop. Emerge works New Zealand wide including in Christchurch where it is the exclusive designers for Generation Homes in that region. This has prompted Emerge to set up a sister company called E-CAD Limited in response to various approaches from group housing companies and residential developers, to provide a tailored on-going architectural draughting service. “We have developed efficient systems to document standard residential projects for our on-going clients, at competitive rates and with quick turnaround times, using either existing standard designs, or designs created by us for specific sites or subdivisions,” explains Rhys. “ We offer this, also with our other Emerge services, throughout New Zealand.” “What we work hard at is tuning in and interpreting the client’s vision, putting them and their needs first, and producing something uniquely suited to their requirements.” www.silvesterclark.co.nz Auckland, Palmerston North and Wellington.
