Dylan and Sandra Davies, directors and operators of Edge Design Studio, relocated from Hamilton to an idyllic situation just out of Featherston, in the Wairarapa, years ago. Since the decision to move, for lifestyle and opportunity reasons, the couple haven’t looked back, adding a Bed and Breakfast business to their already busy lives about two years ago. “We’re located about 15 minutes out of Featherston. This whole region is really booming, with constant increasing demand from those just over the hill in greater Wellington. I can understand why people choose to live here,” says Dylan. With beautiful native bush part of their 25 acre property, Dylan and Sandra, say the Wairarapa is full of promise and is the ideal region for the family to enjoy their recreational passions. “We back onto DOC land, so it’s a very special part of the world we’re in. I can step out the door and go hunting and we’re only about 40 minutes from Upper Hutt or Masterton so it is perfect as a central location.” Spiralling house prices in many parts of Wellington has spurred interest in people moving to the area, to either build new or purchase existing housing stock and modernise with additions and alterations. Dylan’s years of experience and background are able to assist with new build or renovations. Services Edge Design Studio offer include concept design through to consent drawings preparation and submission. They can also assist with forming all project ideas. After an injury caused Dylan to re-evaluate where his passion for building would be best served, he undertook design qualifications and having swung a hammer in all sorts of building forms, that background has really added value to his design capabilities. “When you understand how structures and forms best come together and how spaces work well from a building perspective it really adds another level to the design process. “We are all about producing plans that builders can easily understand and readily work from, without the need to go back and forth on structure details.” Asked how he begins to work up design parameters Dylan says the most important factor is to understand what the client’s life is about; how they live, how they spent their time, whether they enjoy socialising, the number and ages of family members, all come into play. Another service offered by Edge Design Studio is 3D rendering which takes the client into the spaces, surrounding them with an experience of the materials, textures, colour and light impact in each space. This ability to be inside a space adds immeasurably to the sense of feel and connection to the design, Dylan says. The quality of design work produced by Edge Design Studio is also appreciated at Council level given the clarity and details of information submitted, ensuring approval processes are as efficient as possible. Dylan says Edge Design Studio has found the balance of being busy yet maintaining a level of work life balance he’s happy with. “We moved here for lifestyle reasons, so it is important to us we get the balance between work and our life right. I think it’s in a good situation at this time.” Having a philosophical approach to the building industry’s natural waxing and waning cycles is also important to Dylan. “Quieter times are important to have as they give you a chance to step back somewhat and assess the direction of the business and consider options.” When Business Central spoke with Dylan and Sandra, a number of projects were bubbling away across the North Island, including home renovations, new home builds and retail renovations in the Wairarapa. Edge Design Studio designed the couple’s Bed and Breakfast unit –Tui suite at Lakeview Lodge, which provides the peace and tranquility of being nestled in the edge of the bush along with commanding views of Lake Wairarapa and the stunning night skys of the newly established and internationally accredited Wairarapa Dark Sky reserve. There’s been great feedback on design from guests such as: “You can feel all the attention to detail that went into creating this beautiful accommodation. “The accommodation looks like something from Grand Designs — beautiful decor, meticulous craftsmanship and a dreamlike location.” Dylan has regular clients up in the Waikato and says it is a privilidge to have the opportunity to do projects for repeat clients across the country form time to time. All in all, Dylan and Sandra say they are well settled in Wairarapa and wouldn’t want to be living anywhere else 027 208 0517 T.DITTMER@HOTMAIL.COM DITTMER EARTHMOVING • 6X6 Tip Truck and Trailer • 9 ton Bulldozer • 2-15 ton Excavators all with 2D guidance • 200HP Tractor and Trailer • 3 ton Roller Excavator attachments: • Vibrating post and pile driver • Long reach extension • Augers 200-600mm • Wide range of buckets • Tree Saw • Tree Shear • Mulcher • Screening buckets (Gravel and topsoil) Quality is our Priority Master Builders R e g i s t e r e d • New Bathrooms/Kitchens • Alterations & Additions • Project Management • Light Commercial • New Houses • Earthquake Strengthening Shane Lehmstedt Ph. 027 229 7225 | www.qualitybuildersltd.nz
