As President of New Zealand Certified Builders for the Gisborne region part of Brendan Fry’s passion is to help people understand the benefits of using a NZCB builder for their project. New Zealand Certified Builders is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year. “What many people don’t realise is that some of the trade organisations don’t require members to be qualified builders. NZCB the only builder association in New Zealand with strict entry criteria where the minimum entry requirement for all members is a recognised industry trade qualification. Awareness is increasing and that’s a good thing as using an NZCB member for a build gives people much better guarantees and certainty,” he says. To keep skills and knowledge up to date NZCB members undergo regular training in the latest building techniques and are up to speed with industry developments and regulatory requirements. Members also have strong ties with local authorities and educational institutes to ensure a smooth, stress-free building experience. In addition NZCB members can offer clients the Halo 10-Year Residential Guarantee that protects the after the building process, and for the next 10-Years, providing much greater protection than both the Building Act and Consumer Guarantees Act. Quality building is something that’s important to Brendan. He started his apprenticeship in 1993 and became qualified in 1997 under the guidance of Frances Yates, a very prestigious builder within the Gisborne Region. “Frances was a fantastic man to learn from who shared his old school building knowledge and craftsmanship, which I still refer back to today,” says Brendan. Operating in Gisborne, for over 20 years Brendan Fry Builder has been delivering highend results to clients, focusing on craftsmanship and attention to detail, using and working with traditional hand tools and taking the time to make sure every project is delivered to an exceptional standard. Brendan Fry Builder employs its own dedicated team where highly qualified builders work alongside apprentices passing their skills onto the next generation. Projects span new design and build projects and even office fit outs and redevelopments. Brendan Fry Builder also offers the Certified Plans range from NZCB. “We like to feed the industry by employing young people and putting them through apprenticeships. We have four apprentices at the moment including two that are just about to become qualified. We also have two other qualified builders – one that’s been in the trade for around forty years and another for about 25 years.” This allows Brendan Fry Builder to work on two projects at a time - but no more. Brendan says this is a deliberate move to ensure quality remains high at all times. He’s also on the tools as well working alongside his team. “I love being out on site, building and creating things, coming up with the new ideas,” says Brendan. “We work closely with the clients and architects right from the start. That’s important as we can offer input to ensure designs are buildable and keep within the client’s budget.” A good example of the outcomes delivered by close collaboration is a project known as The Bach on the Wainui beachfront. The elegant, luxurious beach house was featured in House & Garden and also the Revere New Zealand Certified Builders magazine. A contemporary design it makes the most of the stunning views and features high-end materials ensuring it blends in with the surrounding environment. At the moment Brendan Fry Builder is working on a couple of renovation projects in Wainui and on the beachfront. Both include gutting the homes and completing a full interior and exterior renovation. Brendan has also been working closely with the community as President of NZCB, as well as his own company, providing support where needed assisting with flood relief, sponsoring local sporting teams and charities. In addition NZCB Gisborne Region members have recently completely photo shoots for their first ever Builders Charity Calendar to help raise awareness for men’s suicide and mental health.
