That is all about to change for the better, with a new purpose-built ambulance station fast taking shape. Designed by Hamilton’s APG Architects, the new two-bay station will provide a modern, warm and functional base for Hato Hone St John Taihape. Leading the building work on site is Whanganui-based W & W Construction. Taihape has been waiting five years or more for this new station, with the Covid pandemic having contributed to delays getting started. “Covid impacted on timeframes and pricing across all our projects,” observes Suzanne Price, Hato Hone St John’s National Property Development Manager. Resource consent was approved in July 2021 and building consent in late 2022. Building started in early February 2023 and has been proceeding smoothly. Suzanne says the contract is on track to finish by early December, with the Taihape team aiming to transition into the new building by the end of the year. “It will be a large step up compared to the current facility, which is not fit for purpose,” she says. “This project has been well supported locally, with the local council providing some funding, plus generous donations from the community. Just one example among many is a local shearing business that is meeting the cost of putting in wool carpet tiles and supporting the wool industry too. It is such a lovely gesture.” Taihape’s new ambulance station includes two bays/garages – one for a frontline emergency ambulance and one for a first response vehicle – showers, toilets, a sluice room, a large medical/equipment storeroom, room for volunteer training and clinical professional “New security features will also keep our people safe at work and, if you are working a 12-hour shift, this new station will be so much more comfortable.” www.bandm.co.nz Proudly serving the community for over forty years.
