Born and bred in Palmerston North, Ann began her career in the sector in the plant’s lab and held various production and technical roles before stepping up as plant manager. Along the way, she has completed management and leadership training, always supported by her company. “This plant has a remarkable history, having been part of the Fielding district’s way of life for more than a century,” she observes. “It was originally built in 1916 and was rebuilt in its current form in 1992. We celebrated the plant’s 100th anniversary in 2016. Some local families have had one generation after another working here from the earliest years through to the current era. “You see the same family names coming through. As a result, we have this very strong bond of continuity and connection with the community.” For Ann, being able to coach and support the next generation of supervisors and managers coming through is a real source of satisfaction. AFFCO offers a structured cadet system along with other training pathways that include diplomas in meat inspection, and health and safety. Ann says hard work and loyalty is rewarded, regardless of gender. As well as providing local jobs and career opportunities, AFFCO Manawatū supports its community in other ways, for example donating to community BBQs and the annual Fielding Salvation Army Christmas lunch. “This plant has a remarkable history, having been part of the Fielding district’s way of life for more than a century.”
