The innovative small to medium sized Wellington based architectural firm has taken home regional awards for houses in Wellington and Hawke’s Bay and a pre-school in Palmerston North. The local awards honour the best new architecture across eight regions with an opportunity for finalists to be considered for national honours. Director Gerald Parsonson is delighted with the publicity the awards bring to the firm and the recognition of the great work that the contractors, builders and young graduates bring to a project. “The awards are great for publicity and credibility and help keep things ticking along,” says Gerald. The Hawke’s Bay regional winner, Tukituki house, is a single-storey home that follows the contours of a gently sloping lifestyle block beneath Te Mata Peak. Stepped floor levels define living, family and bedroom spaces and maximise the lay of the land and dramatic views. A single pitch roof drifts over the top of the build. “It is a family home with a farm-house feel and an urban quality that fits the family’s lifestyle like a glove. We’re really pleased with how relaxed the house feels,” says Gerald. A pool and covered outdoor living spaces offer an escape from the extremes of a Hawke’s Bay summer and support the family’s love of the outdoors. Tukituki house also picked up a Resene Colour Award for its subtle use of greens and blues indoors that relate to the landscape and are inspired by mid-century modernism. Every space feels distinct, yet part of a coordinated whole. Far cry from dryland Hawke’s Bay is the firms award winning house and studio apartment at Eastbourne in the Wellington region. Hinau house sits on flat land between a native bush reserve and the expansive Wellington Harbour. The clients were looking for an accessible house for their retirement with a studio to rent out as a second income. With established trees on the property and the clients desire to maximise the sun, the house and apartment sit apart but are connected by a sheltered boardwalk and garage. The living space of the main house opens out to a small semi-enclosed courtyard with bedrooms upstairs. The studio apartment sits above the garage, adjacent to the street and outdoor living areas of the main house. Angled aluminium louvres maintain privacy between residences while preserving views and sunlight. Clad in dark Colorsteel, the house responds to a seaside vibe with light blue exterior panels. Vertical elements tie in with the trees on the property and in the reserve behind the house. There is an openness to the outdoor garden that is both casual and purposeful with seating areas that are sheltered from the rain and the many wind directions that Wellington is famous for. Outdoor heaters help extend the time spent outside. The downstairs bathroom opens to the garden and there’s an outdoor shower to rinse off after the beach. The interior is a mix of blue and green hues interspersed with pops of strong colour and plywood. The client’s mid-century furniture compliments this interior theme. “The clients were fun to work with and very open to bright colours. The colourful gate is a hint to what’s happening inside,” says Gerald. Adding to a winning run is a playful and very functional preschool in Palmerston North that incorporates fun exterior shapes like the Big Arch window, a nod to the much-loved Play School TV show. ‘Kids love to sit in these windows and watch the busy street outside’” says Gerald. “We’ve used a playful language to punctuate what is fundamentally a very functional Coresteel shed.” “The awards are great for publicity and credibility and help keep things ticking along.”
