BUILDING to page 92 Operating out of Taupo and building homes throughout the Taupo, Central Plateau region, Sunnycourt Homes was started 25 years ago by its owner Doug Simmons when he came to Taupo from Waikato and decided he was there to stay. From the beginning they’ve specialised in site-specific designs, with clients engaged in the planning process right from the start, in a collaborative arrangement which works well for everyone and helps ensure the desired result is achieved. Sunnycourt Homes build houses from entry-level up, but the majority that they do sit comfortably in the middle- to- upper range, which in today’s construction environment means contracts in the $700,000 to $1 million or more bracket. Regardless of their size and spec they’re built to the same build quality, but an entry level home for around $300,000 is likely to measure 100sqm, with ‘basic spec’, which means formica benchtop rather than composite stone or granite, level ceilings, 2.4 stud, vinyls on the floor not tiles, and a heat-pump for heating. “It’s just the level of fixtures and fittings that make the difference plus the simplicity of the design which makes them cheaper and quicker to build,” explains Doug. Entry-level houses are not Sunnycourt Homes’ target market however, as they tend to work with budgets that give them a little more ‘wiggle room’. “You can do some really cool things and add to the appeal of the home.
