| 101 T T Sue Russell New day surgery another top job for Alexander’s Alexander Construction provided its expertise with costing the design and suggesting some ways the hospital could achieve what they wanted and stay within a budget. Alexander Construction BUILDING Kevin Curley, project manager at Hawkes Bay-based Alexander Construction, says the Royston Hospital Day Surgery build came about through a longstanding relationship with the owners of the hospital. “Over the years we’ve done a number of projects on the site, so when they made the decision to build a special-purpose orthopaedic day surgery unit, the first of its type in Hawkes Bay, they brought us in at the concept stage,” Kevin says. The beautifully designed building sits on what was the hospital’s old car park. Alexander Construction provided its expertise with costing the design and suggesting some ways the hospital could achieve what they wanted and stay within a budget. This early intervention, Kevin says, is often key to a successful build following on. “That’s what we enjoy the most. To be involved very early on with the architects and the clients, so that costly later changes to the design are avoided right from the start. I know our clients appreciated this input. Currently 70% of the work we do is done this way.” After being engaged in June 2020, the company began construction of the $31million day surgey facility in September 2020, with the project completed in April 2022. Kevin describes the build as fast-track in terms of the consenting processes because it was consented in three phases. “The foundation was consented first, so that meant construction could get underway while the building above was still being worked through the design phase. It made for real efficiencies. Coincidentally, this was during Covid restrictions, which required a lot of coordination with management.” With Royston Day Surgery situated literally between the main hospital and the racecourse “between horses and patients”, as Kevin describes it, careful planning to ensure noise disruption was minimised was part of his brief. Royston Day Surgery has been recognised by peers in the construction industry, taking out two prestigious awards at the New Zealand Commercial Project Awards – A Gold Award and National Category Winner. Judges commented as to the design strength, focussed around patient comfort and modern healthcare. ‘This is clear throughout the structure, which has been built for a seamless, circular patient journey. On arrival, patients transition through a welcoming reception and pre-surgery waiting and examinations room before moving on to threatres and finishing in recovery areas,” judges noted. Another feature is how well advanced technologies are integrated throughout the facility to enhance operational efficiency and safety. ‘Airframe’ air filtration systems are incorporated in the operating theatres, ensuring a sterile environment is maintained at all times. Kevin says that Alexander Construction has built an enviable reputation and legacy through its 77 years of operation. Today, it engages a team of 80 professionals, across project management, design/quantity surveying, site managers, builders, administration and support staff. “With a focus on developing the next generation we have the most apprentices of any contractors in the Bay and we’re proud of that.” Projects the company gets involved with span a wide array of contexts, from education, health, industrial, community/civic, to social housing contracts, to name a few. “We’re very proud of our contribution to the development of this region, seeing projects we’ve undertaken add value to the Bay’s communities and economy.” “We’re very proud of our contribution to the development of this region, seeing projects we’ve undertaken add value to the Bay’s communities and economy.” ATLAS FIBROUS PLASTER CO.
