Business owner Mike Christie is proud to be adding the next chapter to the family business that started with his grandfather, Ben Christie, who first set up a joinery factory in Ahuriri in the late 1940s. Mike’s father Peter subsequently came on board, working as a carpenter and a joiner, with the business then trading for some years as B Christie & Son. In 1970, Peter became the second-generation owner. Mike initially trained as a plumber before transitioning into building and joinery to assist his father. “I started with Christie Builders and Joiners in 2011 as an apprentice carpenter, after earning qualifications in plumbing, drainlaying and gas fitting. “Over time, I took on more responsibilities. After qualifying as a carpenter, I was interested in understanding how the business side of it operated. My role shifted to running projects and administration before taking over in 2021. “This year, my wife Beck joined to manage our accounts, administration and marketing, which has greatly benefitted the business. My older brother David, a qualified carpenter, is also a key part of our team. Together, we’re committed to maintaining the craftsmanship and quality that CBAJ is known for.” Christie Builders and Joiners offers a wide range of services from new-home builds to renovations, extensions and repairs, kitchen and bathroom builds and all forms of joinery. “We operate our own joinery factory, specialising in building and joinery work for older homes. “We’re fully equipped to create heritage skirtings, mouldings and other architectural features,” Mike says. “For instance, we can craft staircases that replicate the style of the 1930s. “Our collection includes nearly 300 different profiles of handrails, skirtings, architraves and various mouldings. Other builders frequently approach us to have custom pieces made as well.” Christie Builders and Joiners’ website has project photos that demonstrate their expertise. Winning the Best Compliant Timber Joinery award at the 2019 NZ Master Joiner Awards confirmed their credentials as leaders in their industry. The company employs nine full-time staff and plans to take on another two apprentices at the end of this year. Four former Napier Boys’ High School students – all from the same woodwork class – are currently forging successful trade careers with CBAJ: Gareth Deihl, 2022 Hawkes Bay Apprentice of the Year, is now fully qualified; his former classmate Daniel Harvey was named 2023 Hawkes Bay Apprentice of the Year.
