Completed earlier this year by SJL Construction, this graceful getaway was designed by Designgroup Stapleton Elliott for its principal Brian Elliott. Highly detailed and responsive to its environment, this project required a skilled construction team to bring it to reality. Brian approached Tararua District Council for recommendations, and was put in touch with Sam Last from SJL Construction, which was only established in 2019. “Initially, I said I was too busy, but to give me a ring back if he got stuck,” Sam says. “He did ring back, and we agreed on a start time and went from there.” The site is a QEII National Trust-protected native bush block at Herbertville, near the coast of Dannevirke. A few buildings were already on site. An existing hall-type structure with a high-pitched roof and a quirky spiral staircase in manuka was considered for remodeling, but when Brian and Sam met there, the building was so full of cluster flies they could barely see to the other side. This was going to be a project for a neighbour, who had the building lifted and shifted by Brittons House Movers. Meanwhile, two converted shipping containers with bedrooms and bathrooms, by Podlife Tiny Home Builders, also had positions on site, but weren’t hooked up to services. T hese buildings were linked to the new building and to the new swimming pool and woodfired spa, via an extensive decking system of about 100sqm. The remoteness of this site meant it was a bit of a mission to get concrete trucks in for foundations, so instead a ground screw pile system was quickly installed by Stop Digging, which was able to be built on immediately. Inside the home, SJL Construction used marine ply Gaboon to line the interior, and with no fixings to be shown these warm grained panels were all glued in. With no skirtings or scotias, the wall linings were scribed into the floors and ceilings, and Sam and the team relined all the window jambs with the same ply. The durable and beautiful UltraClad aluminium cladding from Vulcan Building Systems was new for the SJL Construction team, and with no visible fixings again, they created clean and crisp lines with architectural precision. Established less than four years ago, New Construction Taupo Ltd specialises in a wide scope of work including new builds, renovations and commercial. In addition to professional achievements, the company directors recently celebrated the birth of their second baby boy. Family owned and operated by Matthew and Laurie Newell, New Construction Taupo is dedicated to meeting the diverse needs of clients across South Waikato and the Central North Island, quickly earning a reputation for its full-service approach to residential and commercial projects of any scale. Laurie, who manages all administrative and accounting duties for the building company, speaks to us from home whilst on maternity leave with their three-week old infant. “I am continuing my work from home when possible,” she says. “Matt has been building since high school and he’s a very proficient, qualified builder and LBP, leading a build team of four across residential, renovation and commercial fit-out projects from start to finish.” From design to completion, New Construction Taupo Ltd delivers quality and reliability every step of the way. The build team includes two qualified builders, and two apprentices. One area where New Construction Taupo has demonstrated significant innovation and diversity is in the design and construction of storage solutions for commercial vehicles. “We designed and built storage solutions for over 30 fleet vehicles including vets, mechanics, electricians, plumbers and builders,” says Laurie. “Each needed some means of specialty storage, for the gear they carry with them. This is where our skills helped design purpose-built systems, to accommodate the different needs and requirements.” As well as commercial vehicle fit-outs, New Construction Taupo offers building and project management services for commercial, new residential, renovations and alterations of any scale, kitchen and bathroom upgrades, decking, fencing and retaining walls. The team is capable in both urban and rural settings, undertaking projects that range from farm pole sheds and rural buildings to architectural new homes and complex residential renovations. The company has recently completed the refurbishment of Taupo’s Robert Harris Café, managing the entire interior gutting and refit process. With a two-to-three-week timeframe to complete, the team coordinated all subcontractors to ensure the fit-out was smooth and on schedule. Their efficiency and attention to detail have led to further opportunities, including another restaurant refurbishment in Kinloch.
