128 | Roofing demand drives expansion SB Building and Roofing covers the whole of the Wairarapa region. SB Building and Roofing T T Kelly Deeks BUILDING Wairarapa’s SB Building and Roofing continues to grow despite current economic challenges, with its three-year-old roofing division still enjoying plenty of enquiries, with signs of more demand throughout the region. SB Building and Roofing owner Sam Barbour says construction enquiry has also just started to pick up, and although interest rates aren’t quite there yet, projects are in the planning for future start dates. However, in South Wairarapa two of the region’s most popular towns, Martinborough and Greytown, are currently stymied for growth, with no new consents being approved, thanks to their wastewater treatment plants being at or over capacity. “We do a lot of work in Martinborough and Greytown, so that will affect us,” Sam says. “It will take several years to complete. We are going to feel the impact of this until they start issuing consents again.” Fortunately for Sam, SB Building and Roofing covers the whole of the large Wairarapa region, so for now he focuses on what he can do in Masterton, Carterton, and Featherston. “We’re doing a lot of roofing,” he says. “Also, full builds for private clients and spec houses for developers. “We’ve got great subcontractors who we work with to provide a full service, so our clients don’t have to worry about anything.” Sam started SB Roofing in 2021 after getting an experienced roofer to join his team. Seeing roofing as a useful addition to his offering, Sam expanded this division straight away when another talented local roofer also joined the team. “ It has grown ever since,” he says. “We now have eight roofers and we’re looking to try to expand.” Sam says he can see a gap in the local marketplace for a decent-sized roofing company of good quality. SB Roofing grew quickly and in the past few months Sam has seen a few out-of-town roofing companies turning up. “There is a market, so by growing, I can push a few of them back to where they came from.” SB Building and Roofing is currently training both roofing and building apprentices. Sam has a close relationship with the local polytechnic, and they are in touch regularly to create pathways to apprenticeships for upcoming talent. A couple of high schools keep Sam in the loop as to kids coming through who are interested in the trade, and word of mouth is also a big driver for recruitment. As well as his passion for building, Sam loves the thrill of the chase, so the challenges in the marketplace give him plenty of impetus to work through them. “I’ve managed to grow a company to the point where I can have my signs up all around the region and people commenting on my work. It’s extremely satisfying.” www.hol l ingsfirst.co.nz 06 377 3676 scott@hollingsfirst.co.nz Hollings First Aluminium are proud to support SB Building & Roofing WINDOWS AND DOORS GARAGE DOORS 06 929 7679 79 Norfolk Road, Carterton Proud to support SB Building & Roofing Galvin Decorating Interior/Exterior Painting & Decorating • NEWBUILDS • RENOVATIONS • AIRLESS SPRAYING • FREE QUOTES Proudly supporting SB Building & Roofing 021 980 127 galvindecorating@gmail.com Wairarapa’s Leading Manufacturer of • Flashings • Fencing • Pergolas • Louvres • Long Run Roofs • Fascia • Spouting • Patios PROUDLY SUPPORTING SB BUILDING & ROOFING 021 195 5052 | stratco.co.nz NEED A NEW ROOF OR SPOUTING?
