Downer is currently working on a new shared path project for cyclists and pedestrians through Ōtaki, which is part of the Peka Peka to Ōtaki (PP2Ō) Expressway project. As well as improving safety for walkers and cyclists, the new pathway is poised to boost local tourism. It will link the township with the rest of Kāpiti via existing shared pathways. Having finished the footpath itself, the focus of Downer’s construction team has now turned to installing two clip-ons – one for the old Ōtaki River Bridge and another for the Waitohu Stream Bridge – for the final stage. “We’re working closely with NZTA (the client) and WSP (project engineer) on this challenging and complex project, with works progressing well to date,” says Matt Erard, Downer’s regional manager Manawatū/Whanganui. Downer is also a key partner on the Ōtaki to north of Levin Road (Ō2NL) Road of National Significance project, which also includes a shared walking and cycling path, and will connect with the PP2Ō. The four-lane expressway is set to greatly improve safety and reliability of travel within and through the growing Kāpiti and Horowhenua area. Construction is due to start towards the end of 2025. South of the Ohau river, Downer will be working with alliance partners McConnell Dowell, Beca and Tonkin + Taylor in partnership with Muaūpoko Tribal Authority, hapū of Ngāti Raukawa ki te Tonga, NZTA and Horowhenua District Council. “As that project starts to gain momentum, it’s going to create a lot more opportunities for employment and engagement with local contractors, so it’s quite exciting for our region.” Another exciting contract for Downer is a new commercial vehicle safety centre (CVSC) project, on track for completion in December. Sited outside RNZAF Base Ohakea, the new high-tech facility is replacing an old New Zealand Police weigh station on State Highway 1/3 near Bulls. It is one of 12 such facilities being built on high-volume freight routes around the country. Weigh-in-motion (WIM) highway sensors are being installed as part of the project. These will automatically weigh heavy trucks as they pass, enabling fast detection of potentially non-compliant loads that can then be checked at the safety centre. The focus of Downer’s construction team has now turned to installing two clip-ons – one for the old Ōtaki River Bridge and another for the Waitohu Stream Bridge REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT Downer - Manawatū-Whanganui • Traffic Management Plans (TMP) • Council Permits (CAR) • TTM Risk Assessment • Traffic Management Consulting • Project Management • Traffic Impact Assessment • TTM Mentoring • TTM Training & Assessment info@securetraffic.co.nz 0204998897 www.securetraffic.co.nz Your Trusted TTM Partner
