The project involves the construction of a new 6km route that will bypass the existing steep, narrow, and winding path over Mt Messenger. Funded by the Government’s Accelerated Regional Roading Programme and the National Land Transport Programme, the project aims to significantly enhance road safety, resilience, and overall journey experience. “This bypass is not just about improving a road, it’s about transforming the way people travel through this region. We’re committed to delivering a safer, more efficient route that will benefit both locals and visitors for years to come,” says Caleb Perry, owner interface manager at Te Ara o Te Ata: Mt Messenger Bypass. The new bypass, which is between Uruti to Ahititi, features two bridges spanning approximately 125m and 30m, as well as a 235-m tunnel. The route will be positioned at a lower elevation and offer a gentler grade compared to the existing road, addressing longstanding concerns about the challenging terrain. The Mt Messenger Alliance, a collaborative effort bringing together NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi, Downer, HEB Construction, Tonkin & Taylor, and WSP, is spearheading the project. This coalition brings a wealth of national and international experience in infrastructure development to the table, says Caleb. The alliance team comprises a diverse group of professionals, including transport designers, engineers specialising in geometric, geotechnical, structural and construction expertise, RMA planners and environmental specialists. Ecologists, landscape architects and stakeholder and communication professionals are also integral to the team, ensuring a well-rounded approach to the project’s execution, says Caleb. Construction is already underway, with an expected completion time of approximately 2028. We are proud to partner with Mt Messenger Alliance and to supply themwith our wide range of Motorola award-winning communications products and services, both on and offshore. 28+ Years ------------------- of Making it Happe n PROUD SUPPLIERS TO MT MESSENGER ALLIANCE 06 759 8999 | | mccomms.co.nz
