T T from page 42 Te Ara o Te Ata – Mt Messenger Bypass REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT The Te Ara o Te Ata - Mt Messenger Bypass project faces unprecedented challenges due to the area’s formidable topography, which has led to innovative engineering solutions, says Caleb Perry, owner interface manager at Te Ara o Te Ata - Mt Messenger Bypass. “The typography is so mountainous that the logistics of building the project have been incredibly difficult,” he says. To overcome these obstacles, the project team has implemented a solution that is a first for New Zealand road construction: a cableway system. “We’ve installed a cableway to get access into the central northern area of the project. It’s a one-kilometre-long cableway from the ridge of Mt Messenger and takes up to 20-tonne payloads into the valley. The cableway is a lifeline for the entire project. That’s the only access we have in there – excavators, loaders, dumpers, people, materials all go in on the cableway.” The system’s versatility and capacity have proven crucial in navigating the challenging terrain. It has also aided the project’s commitment to minimising environmental impact. The cableway’s technical specifications are impressive. It extends 600m from a north anchor point to a 28m central tower and integrated control station. A backstay section covers an additional 500m from the central tower to the south anchor point, though this section isn’t used for transportation. It is also equipped with a gondola that can carry eight trained personnel, ensuring safe and efficient movement of the workforce. Importantly, the cableway is a temporary fixture. On completing its mission, the Mt Messenger Cableway will be carefully dismantled and returned to its supplier. info@personneltouch.co.nz personneltouch.co.nz 04 298 9719 At Personnel Touch, we specialise in providing tailored employment solutions designed to meet the dynamic needs of your construction business.
