Hawke’s Bay: M J Cave Contracting REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT Supporting Hawke’s Bay’s horticulture industry with their hard-working team producing high-quality fencing and orchard development services for the past eight years, Mat and Raynae Cave of MJ Cave Contracting continue to grow their business with some tried-and-tested wholesale orchard supplies now available for contractors and orchardists to purchase direct. Mat has been fencing since he was a young boy, learning the skills by working alongside his grandfather. After working in the industry for a few years, he established MJ Cave Contracting to offer an open and honest, solutions-focused service and get small or large jobs completed as efficiently as possible. From the huge selection of materials available, ranging from the cheap to the more extravagant, MJ Cave Contracting will quote for the right materials for their client and their job. “We are using a product called Spiralfast, a strong and durable wire joiner that is quick and easy to install, sustainable, and half the cost of some of the alternatives,” Raynae says. “We use them for 90% of our work with more and more clients coming across to them.” Spiralfast is available to purchase from MJ Cave Contracting’s online shop and is enjoying an increasing amount of customers as word gets around New Zealand’s small orcharding community. As Mat and Raynae gained experience and listened to their clients’ requirements, they have spent some time developing their own innovative hail netting system, which protects fruit and crops from New Zealand’s harsh and unique weather conditions. With some largescale orchard developments in the pipeline, Mat and Raynae have recently up-scaled their hail netting venture and started a new company, Advanced Netting, in order to be able to supply large volumes to these sizeable developments. Meanwhile, in the Hawke’s Bay, the horticulture industry is now in recovery mode after being in survival mode following Cyclone Gabrielle in February 2023. MJ Cave Contracting has repaired fencing and farm tracks and is now replacing temporary fencing with permanent fencing, and reinstating orchards and parts of orchards that were lost in the flood. “Last season was all about fix and repair, and this season we are able to reinstate them with what they’ve lost.” Mat says it is hard to pinpoint exactly, but this work could go on for the next three years or more. 027 848 2170 | farmgearrural.co.nz Proudly supporting MJ Cave Contracting Supplying all things rural with delivery anywhere in Hawke’s Bay available. No project too big or small with the supply of all fencing materials. “Now their repairs are done, people can finally start to move forward again but their bank balances have been drained and the flow-on effect comes to businesses like ours. Now we’re in a recession and it’s a double-banger for the people in this area.” Mat and Raynae know exactly what their clients are going through and are here to help. “Whenever we quote a job, the thing that’s first and foremost in our minds is how we can make it as affordable as possible,” Raynae says. “We quote for what they need, and nothing they don’t, and Mat, with his very good understanding of planning fence lines, is able to cut out angles that aren’t required and keep the cost down.” “Last season was all about fix and repair, and this season we are able to reinstate them with what they’ve lost.”
