PAGE 14 CONTRACTING Safety-conscious plumbing and drainage foreman Andre Latell of Hawke’s Bay’s Advanced Plumbing, Drainage, and Gas has been named 2024 New Zealand Plumber, Gasfitter, or Drainlayer Employee of the Year at Master Plumbers 2024 New Zealand Plumbing Awards. The award recognises the excellence in Andre’s trade skills, the respect he commands as a member of his trade, and the leadership skills he is well-known for. Andre has been a huge part of the Advanced team and its successes of the past 12 years. “He has been part of the fabric that makes up our team,” says Advanced Plumbing, Drainage, and Gas managing director Mark Watkins. “He was part of the team that came up with the ‘Core Values’ of our business and is a man who lives by those values.” Andre is a certifying drainlayer and tradesman plumber and has been foreman on many high-profile projects in the Hawke’s Bay over the past decade, including the Regional Sports Park, a $30 million residential home, and lately the three-year project at the new ZIWI pet food processing factory in Awatoto, which is likely where his finest work is displayed. The completed first stage of this was totally submerged in the Cyclone Gabrielle floods. Andre was one of the first on deck to start the massive task of clean-up after Cyclone Gabrielle at the ZIWI pet food factory. “He led the team and he had to face some incredibly challenging environments, not only dealing with the water and silt damage, but negotiating 800 tonnes of rotting pet food ingredients,” Mark says. “Andre never expected his team to enter some of the more unpleasant environments that were encountered on the clean-up, but he volunteered himself for the worst of the tasks. Safety, PPE, and sanitation were paramount to his site, and Andre was also able to give tradesmen and apprentices many experiences of working on different plumbing and drainage systems that many never get to experience within their careers.” Andre’s commitment to making sure his team and all those around his site are kept safe is part of the fabric that makes him an outstanding foreman, and his commitment to extra training with WorkSafe and many Master Plumbers courses is a testament to this. Andre has recently graduated with the New Zealand Certificate in Workplace Health and Safety after winning a scholarship to study with Site Safe. He also took out the pinnacle MVP award at the biannual Advanced Plumbing Awards Night. “Andre’s approach to guiding and supporting tradesmen and apprentices on site is one that many should follow,” Mark says. “Everyone goes home safe when tasks are completed under Andre’s direction and supervision. He has the respect of his peers, fellow tradesmen on sites, and all those that work with or under him. Many civil engineers will call Andre for solutions and advice on the best ways to handle drainage and plumbing situations onsite.” Mark is proud of Andre and the entire Advanced team, who put in a continuous effort to succeed. Senior staff of Andre’s calibre provide a firm foundation for Advanced Plumbing, Drainage, and Gas to set a high standard amongst its numerous apprentices as they learn how to work the Advanced Way.
