Halverson Civil T T Hugh de Lacy “We have found the labour market more challenging post-Covid, and we make a real effort to provide a work environment and employment benefits that help retain staff.” CIVIL Growing from sole-trader beginnings in the early 1990s, Halverson Civil Ltd has blossomed into a staff of 25 highly qualified engineers and associated professionals specialising in geotechnical construction throughout the greater Wellington area. “We perform projects for residential, infrastructure and vertical construction with a core focus on ground-engineering solutions,” managing director Ryan Halverson says. Halverson Civil’s services include foundation piling, retaining walls, shotcrete walls, ground anchors and slope stabilisation. “We’re also proud to have introduced Continuous Flight Auger (CFA) foundation piling into Wellington, and we continue to deliver value engineering solutions nationwide,” Ryan adds. After a period of sole trading, founder Clarke Halverson launched into site works, contracting under the name Halverson Contracting, before expanding into drilling and retaining works, and eventually into Halverson Civil. In 2006, the company grew sharply with the acquisition of an established piling and anchoring company, and two years later Ryan joined his father’s firm after completing an Engineering Geology and Environmental Sciences degree at the University of Canterbury. Halverson Civil owns all its own plant, a comprehensive list that extends from piling rigs, cranes and drills to trucks and excavators, working out of a yard in the Wellington suburb of Grenada North, which includes a 2000sqm combined offices and mechanical workshop. Its experienced staff includes project managers, site engineers, supervisors and construction staff. “Our team is comprised of permanent staff and selected semi-permanent contracted labourers to enable us to scale as required for projects,” Ryan says. “We have found the labour market more challenging post-Covid, and we make a real effort to provide a work environment and employment benefits that help retain staff.” The company has a record of over 30 years of servicing a range of construction, corporate, residential and government clients. Recent projects include being engaged by Downer NZ to deliver the foundations and ground engineering for the new Porirua City Centre wastewater retention tank, which involved installing 550 piles to support structures and the tank holding seven million litres of wastewater. Halverson Civil assisted in the design process and was part of the construction team that completed Wellington’s Haining Street Apartments for CMP Construction and the Nightingale Group. In a collaborative effort with ENGEO and the Hutt City Council, it completed a remediation project at Lower Hutt’s Point Howard after a big slip in March last year cut off services to 165 homes and access to 20. Halverson Civil was engaged early on in the Howard Road slip remediation process, delivering design development, site management and both temporary and permanent works. The Wellington City Council also needed Halverson Civil’s aid to stabilise a slip on Onslow Rd, and an approach was provided that accelerated the programme by undertaking peak works during the school holiday period to expedite the project delivery and reduce delays to the public. A busy 2023 was highlighted for the company by winning the Projects Under $600K Award for the Moera Secant project in the Civil Contractors NZ Wellington and Wairarapa FOR ALL YOUR REINFORCING NEEDS Supply, Cut, Bend & Install Residential • Commercial • Industrial MOB: 021 999 375 14B Constance St, Waiwhakaiho N.P. www.taranakireinforcing.co.nz
