Put yourself in front of potential clients RETAIL » Capital Egg Company Providing ‘eggy goodness’ to the capital Capital Eggs supplies a full range of eggs including standard, barn, and free range. Kelly Deeks F or nearly 60 years, Capital Egg Company has provided high quality eggs and egg products to restaurants, hotels, cafés, and caterers across the Wellington region. During the recent Covid-19 lockdown, this was expanded to include residential home deliveries. “We wanted people to be able to get their eggs when they weren’t leaving their houses,” says Capital Eggs general manager Steve Knapton. Capital Eggs began life as Tasman Poultry Farm, under Johannes Van Dyk, then 30 years ago under his son Peter Van Dyk, Capital Eggs started its distribution business. When Steve joined the company mid-2019, one of his first projects was to redesign the website to allow for online payments with a view to going down the home delivery route. The new website went live February 2020, with the Covid-19 lockdown beginning a month later. “We started off with about five deliveries a day, when we got to 20 deliveries a day we were cheer- ing. When Covid-19 hit, overnight, we went to 200 deliveries a day.” Capital Eggs supplies the full range of eggs including standard, barn, free range, and packaged egg products from Zeagold Foods. Steve says Capital Eggs supplies the full range to ensure all customers will have access to high qual- ity, healthy, and nutritious eggs. “We want people to have healthy food, and you can’t get better than an egg,” he says. “Like a super-natural vitamin pill, eggs contain 14 essential nutrients for everyday health and well- ness, including high quality protein, amino acids, calcium, sodium, iodine, selenium, choline, and vitamins A, B, D and E.” What goes into a chicken is what comes out of it, and for Capital Eggs it is all about how the company’s network of egg producers cares for their chickens. Steve visits each producer supplier on a regular basis, and Capital Eggs are very happy with the ‘eggceptional’ quality eggs they receive. “We are very happy with the relationships we have with our suppliers, especially during this time of uncertainty, it’s been great to be able to count on those relationships.” “We are very happy with the relationships we have with our suppliers, especially during this time of uncertainty, it’s been great to be able to count on those relationships.” Capital Eggs provides premium cafe grade eggs, which have thick shells and are particularly good for poaching. “They are also very, very fresh,” Steve says. “We try to move our eggs out of our premises within three days, and we receive them within one or two days of being laid.” The company aims to fulfilled online orders within two working days, and used packaging is picked up. He says while home delivery customers enjoy the range of egg options, they do seem to prefer the free-range eggs. Steve says it is pleasing to note Capital Eggs customers and the general public are concerned about animal welfare and where and how their food is produced. For the first time this year, Capital Eggs will be at the Wellington Food Show from October 30. The Capital Egg Company stand will be shared with Foxton Fizz, another classic Kiwi company that fits well with the Capital Eggs brand, and which Capital Eggs also supplies to restaurants, cafés, and homes.
