T ākina is New Zealand’s first convention centre to be awarded the 5 Green Star NZ Custom Tool Design Certified Rating. he certification was awarded by the New Zealand Green Building Council, part of an in- ternational network with more than 70 green building councils around the world. The green building certification represents New Zealand excellence for environmental sustainability and leadership in green building designed, built and operated in a way that minimises negative impacts on the environ- ment and the people visiting and working in the building. Tākina’s green star design features include enhanced thermal insulation and high-per- formance double glazing via the Sefar glazing system and efficient automatically controlled LED lighting, air conditioning and ventilation systems designed for improved thermal com- fort and energy efficiency. Combined these create a 66% carbon reduc- tion and 60% in energy savings when bench- marked against a comparable new build. It also includes water efficient fittings and rainwater-harvesting system estimated to reduce potable water consumption by 30% and timber materials sourced from sustaina- ble forestry. City Council acting Chief Infrastructure Officer Mike Mendonca says that the sustain - able features serve as an exemplar in terms of what’s achievable through top-quality architecture design, engineering and fit-out choices. “It also totally fits with the City’s Council’s stated aim that Wellington should become a zero-carbon capital by 2050, our new buildings need this high standard of design.” Mike says it’s intended Wellington’s revamped Central Library also be a Green Star building and other opportunities will be looked at. He adds that importantly the project has considered not only the impacts on the envi- ronment but also the comfort and wellbeing of the people inside the building. “Increasingly conference and event organ- isers are looking at the values, attitudes and approaches to climate change and sustainabil- ity of venues and we expect that this will only increase. “The Green Star certification of Tākina is a demonstrable indication of our commitment and leadership in this area,” he says.
