Project Maunga also includes a new energy centre and computer room to improve the overall resilience of the campus-wide infra- structure at the hospital. It will house critical electrical infrastructure and provide 72 hours of back-up power to the campus. The roof is designed to withstand ash-fall from a 1 in 2,500-year volcanic event. The En- ergy Centre will also house Computer Room 4, a dedicated facility for key ICT infrastructure. The project will also deliver a rooftop helipad with direct access to ED, ICU and theatres improving patient transfer times. The Taranaki Base Hospital Redevelopment Project was initiated in August 2007. Stage One, the Acute Services Building, was officially opened in June 2014. Project Maunga commenced in March 2021 and the project is expected to be completed by December 2024. Ian says that local partnerships have been an important part of the project both in terms of utilising local contractors where possible and liaising with iwi on Māori art to go into the finished buildings. He says the expected outcomes of Taranaki Base Hospital Redevelopment Project include reduced clinical risk, improved resilience of the hospital, better models of care and increased capacity and improved equity of access for Māori.
