In the 1950s, Mercy X-Ray was using chemicals to develop x-ray images, and Broad- way Radiology has pioneered the use of digital technology to remove the chemicals and the health and safety risks of working with them. Broadway Radiology has worked closely with network provider Inspire to install fibre broad - band, allowing images to be sent between Horowhenua, Feilding, and Palmerston North. “We’ve had a picture archiving and commu- nication system in place for 10 years, and we hold more than 24 million radiology images stored on our system.” In diagnostic equipment, Broadway Radi- ology is operating the latest 3T MRI machine, the only one of its kind in the region. The 3T MRI has a stronger magnet than other types of MRI, and provides higher detailed images in less time. “We’ve gone with Philips, we have their latest ultrasound machines, CT, and MRI. We have a good collaboration with them in terms of software upgrades. “For us as a regional centre, we can’t be at the forefront of research, so that’s why we’ve got close with Philips, a global medical equip- ment provider with research laboratories all around the world. Philips provides us the latest software developments and the service contract to keep these machines running. We are close to the research thanks to Philips and their global network.” Just like Broadway Radiology’s majestic building, Duncan says his staff are also majes - tical. ‘We’ve got the facility and the equipment, but the staff are also very well qualified and experienced,” he says. “We provide them with in-house training and professional development to keep their registrations current. When people walk through the door, they probably don’t realise what is behind the name of Broadway in terms of the experience and expertise.
