LEATHER INDUSTRY Tasman Tanning “We’ve become an integral part of our community. At Tasman, we believe we thrive when our community thrives.” Among the company’s clients are world-lead- ing brands across myriad market segments: automotive, fashion, aviation, footwear and interior upholstery. Neville says that Tasman Tanning strives to create products that not only meet the demand for quality, but also represent the relationship of trust it shares with its custom- ers and this latest development is just another example of that. “Our customers demand quality because of their reputation. We provide them with trans- parency because it is our responsibility. “We believe in working honestly, openly and ethically alongside the people, businesses and brands we supply. “We work with integrity to echo their reputa- tion and values, all the way to the start of our process.” The company has recently invested millions in increasing capacity and efficiencies in its dye house. Neville says the modern technology will help Tasman Tanning to be more responsive to customer demand as well as reduce energy consumption. Within its tannery 83% of the energy it uses comes from renewable sources and he says that it is also looking at how to recover energy from its waste water system and direct it back into the factory to be further utilised. Tasman Tanning also partners with leaders of the industry to advocate for the highest standards and continuous improvement in husbandry and farming. Its suppliers are members of the New Zealand Farm Assurance Programme, an industry collaboration to create a single standard of excellence around integrity, traceability, bio-security, sustaina- bility and animal welfare on New Zealand’s farms. Tasman Tanning is a member of the Leather Working Group, an international multi stakeholder group that pushes for environ- mental best practice throughout the leather supply chain. Tasman Tanning employs 200-250 staff depending on time of year. The business also generates significant employment for other local businesses such as engineering firms. “We’ve become an integral part of our com- munity. At Tasman, we believe we thrive when our community thrives.” Neville says that one of the founding share- holders still comes into the office every day demonstrating the true passion the owners have for the business and keeping it local. “All of the shareholders share this same passion and it is this that is the driving force behind the success of Tasman Tanning over so many years. Through 65 years of experience Tasman Tanning recognises that growth is always earned by reputation. We’ve seen the world become a more connected and conscious place, where people look to brands they can trust. We honour this responsibility enthusiastically, and we are committed to a sustainable future. “Our respect for both product and the place that provides it drives new innovation, new actions and new measures to look after it.”
