76 | CONTRACTING Russell Roads New plant gurantees supply Russell Roads comprises construction, quarry, asphalt and an industrial/commercial division. R ussell Roads has recently opened a new asphalt plant that enables the company to offer a full civil construction service to clients. “Operating our own modern and purpose built asphalt manufacturing facility, which uses our own quarry materials, enables us to provide assurance of supply to our custom- ers,” says company CEO Stuart McKinnon. Six years in the making, the asphalt plant on Omahu Road in Hastings produces industry standard asphalt that is fully certified and ready to be laid. With quality and sustainabili- ty being important values at Russell Roads the entire plant has been built specifically to lower the impact that it has on the environment. “It is one of the lowest-emission plants in New Zealand due to the design of the plant and the facility that has been established around the asphalt chute. “We are also keen to investigate the op- portunity to recycle existing asphalt surfaces for further use within our business,” explains Stuart. Based in Hastings, Russell Roads has a his- tory dating back to 1973 when it was started by brothers Chris and Ken Russell. The company was purchased by Robbie and Michelle Gale in 2019 after they had previous- ly merged their concrete business with Russell Roads some years before. Since then the Gales have built the capac- ity of the wider Russell Roads group with an asphalt plant and quarries resulting in a highly successful full-service civil construction company. Russell Roads comprises construction, quarry, asphalt and an industrial/commercial division. Construction services include instal- lation of utilities, earthworks, concrete works, roading and surfacing construction, pavement stabilisation and minor structures. The company operates four consented quarries across the greater Hawke’s Bay giving T T Karen Phelps “It is one of the lowest-emission plants in New Zealand due to the design of the plant and the facility that has been established around the asphalt chute.” it the ability to source and produce high quali- ty roading materials. Stuart says that everything the company does is underpinned by four key values: Whānau, quality, sustainability and trust. “Our values lead our focus and how we op- erate. All policies, processes and procedures arise from these four value principles. “As a sustainable business, we challenge industry and business norms to balance the needs of our people, planet and profit,” says Stuart. As a locally owned and operated company with significant history in the local area Russell Roads aims to give back. It supports the local community through job creation and utilising the services of local suppliers where possible. With many roading and infrastructure projects currently taking place in the region Russell Roads is busy working on a variety of projects including Waka Kotahi’s multi-million dollar College Road project. The project will see the realignment of College Road to Silver- stream Station on SH2. Works being complet- ed by Russell Roads include straightening and widening a 1.7 kilometre section of highway with a new southbound passing lane with wider shoulders and median and side barriers, which will improve the safety and efficiency of this key freight route between Hawke’s Bay, the Manawatū and Tairāwhiti. Stuart says that construction is expected to take 14 months, finishing early 2022. “One of our main goals as we build the project will be to minimise disruption to the commuters and locals. Most of the construc- tion work will be ‘offline’, with our crews working alongside the existing highway, which will reduce delays to road users. “This is a good example of the way we work collaboratively with clients using the skills of our talented team to deliver an outstanding result.” email: justin@chbearthmovers.com or Specialised Designer Concrete TM Exposed Aggregate RibRaft ® New Zealand’s largest & most respected national supplier of CERTIFIED CONCRETE ® Firth are proud to be associated with Russell Roads www.firth.co.nz 0800 CONCRETE (0800 266 273) MASHFlex - Wire Rope Safety Barrier - MASH TL-3 MASH Product Range EZY Guard 4 EZY Guard HC SoftStop ® MASHFlex QuadGuard ® ArmorZone ™ BG800 ™
