Based in Oakura, and led by directors Lachie McLean, Jonathon (Jono) Warn, Tara Harvey, and Abbey Buckley, Coastal Construction is a young but capable family-focused business founded just over three years ago by long-time friends Lachie and Jono. Initially brought together by a shared vision of balancing family life with high-quality building work, the two have grown the business steadily through word-of-mouth referrals, repeat clients, and a strong focus on relationships. “Most of our work comes from recommendations,” says Lachie. “That makes the first meeting with a client so much easier. When people come to us because someone they trust has worked with us, we’re already a step ahead in building that trust.” Now specialising in renovations, the Coastal Construction team takes pride in guiding clients through the entire process, from concept to completion. Lachie says many homeowners know what they want, but struggle to articulate it, and that’s where the team excels. “We take the time to walk through every detail with them. Our process is really a journey, making sure everyone’s comfortable from the first phone call through to handover.” Coastal Construction’s point of difference is its full-service capability. With their own digger and machinery, the team is equipped to handle everything from site works and drainage to the final finishing touches. This one-stop-shop approach saves clients time, hassle, and often cost, with fewer contractors involved. “We’re hands-on from the foundations to the roof, and everything in between,” says Lachie. “We often assist our plumbers, do our own excavation, and manage the whole project in-house. Clients love that they’re not being bounced between different contractors.” Lachie’s own background in both machinery operation and building has shaped the company’s wide skill base. After initially leaving his building apprenticeship to pursue a career in civil contracting, Lachie was later encouraged by a mentor at Street & Cook Construction to finish his qualification. That led to seven years working on significant commercial projects in Christchurch, including helicopter hangars and multi-storey apartments, before returning to Taranaki to build his parents’ new home and establish Coastal Construction. Co-director Jono worked in the oil and gas industry for more than eight years prior to Covid, and he brings a wide range of qualifications and machinery experience to the business. Now almost re-qualified as a builder, Jono has a passion for the varied work construction offers. Tara and Abbey round out the leadership team, taking care of finance, administration, and health and safety, all critical pillars supporting the business. Recent projects include a Department of Conservation bridge replacement on the Veronica Loop Track, requiring remote site management and helicopter support, and the Oakura Playcentre upgrade, showcasing the team’s landscaping and community- engagement skills.
