PAGE 14 BUILDING Matt Fenn’s first building job after finishing his apprenticeship had him working mainly on character homes, which gave him a taste for the challenges that come with the territory when renovating older villas and bungalows. That’s why, in 2017, when he started his own company in Hawke’s Bay where he grew up, he called it Total Renovations. “I like difficult building. I find some of the newer stuff is less interesting. I like the challenge of having to match in the new part to an old house and make it look like it’s always been there,” Matt explains. Today, Total Renovations is led by project manager, Jay Eriksen, with a team of five on the tools, including an apprentice. Matt oversees the business and focuses on bringing in new projects. Michele Cruz manages the marketing and admin, supported by Matt’s wife, Eliza. What began as work from friends and personal contacts has grown steadily through word-of-mouth and glowing referrals. While the team takes on renovation projects from all eras, they still have a special passion for restoring the villas and bungalows that have inspired Matt from the beginning. An early project remains typical of what they do: putting a second storey on a 1910 villa while ensuring that it didn’t then look out of place on Napier’s Hospital Hill among the other houses from the same era. One of a series of jobs for the same client, it meant transforming a little box of a bungalow without losing its character. “It had an amazing view behind it that you couldn’t see from anywhere in the old house, so putting the second floor on with the kitchen and living and a big deck out the back meant you could see all over Napier and get the sun, which you didn’t before,” says Matt. Adding a second storey involved rebuilding most of the original house to take the load, while keeping the original matai weatherboard cladding to preserve the look: new foundations, new piles, then big beams and posts to make it safe. Weatherboard cladding and timber-framed windows on the new level in keeping with the original look, and all the balconies and decks also built in timber, including timber railing, all added to the project’s success, Matt says. “We transformed it into a three-bedroom, modern home inside, with a new bathroom, and open-plan, sunny living upstairs, but from the outside it’s difficult to tell where the old stops and the new starts, which is the whole idea.” Matt knows that the earlier he comes on and the more he knows, the better, especially when it comes to budget. “It’s essential for me to know what their budget is, not because we’re trying to spend all their money, but so we can do the best we can with what there is.” Total Renovations has its clients’ welfare in mind to the extent that there’s a brochure on their website explaining all the things clients would ideally have thought about before they picked up the phone for that first contact.
