120 | BUILDING A-Stage Construction A-Stage Construction provides bespoke construction services across the Manawatū region. T T Karen Phelps A-Stage Construction is celebrating 10 years in business, which owner Livy Jansen, who runs the company with husband Kalvin, says is a major achievement for them, having successfully navigated the economic turbulence that has followed the market post-pandemic. “We’ve not had an easy few years coming off the back of Covid-19 and the resulting economy. We’ve made it this far by forward thinking and planning where the future takes us. There is a lot to be proud of,” explains Livy. Since it began in 2015, A-Stage Construction has built its reputation on providing bespoke construction services across the wider Manawatū region, specialising in home renovations, architectural home builds and light commercial projects. The company has centred on building strong relationships with clients and differentiating itself from larger competitors through personalised service. “We are a small, family-owned business and very personable. We have also been through our own personal renovation and building projects, which has given us an understanding of the process from the other side,” says Livy. This personal touch has generated significant repeat business and word-of-mouth referrals. “We have a lot of repeat clients we work with, and hopefully it’s like catching up with an old friend when they pick up the phone and T T Katren Phelps Reputation built on tackling tricky projects McInnes Construction has added a new string to its bow, becoming the Skyline Buildings distributor for the Kapiti Coast alongside continuing to build a strong reputation for tackling complex residential projects in sought-after developments like Manu Park. Scott McInnes, who has been a builder for nearly 18 years and established his own company five years ago, has taken on the distributorship as an expansion of his Paraparaumu-based business and will offer garages, carport and gottages or sleepouts. The move comes as it continues to grow through word-of-mouth recommendations and challenging projects across the Wellington region. “We’re very excited about the Skyline Buildings venture for them and how we will be able to tackle standalone Skyline projects for clients or use the products as a nice addition to a house build,” says Scott. McInnes Construction has built a particularly strong presence in Manu Park, Waikanae’s new subdivision, where it has completed eight homes for A1 Homes and Classic Builders. The most recent projects were two four-bedroom, single-storey modern homes around square metres, featuring separate living areas, open-plan kitchens, two bathrooms and double garages with internal access. One was clad in cedar vertical shiplap and James Hardie weatherboard and the other one in a lightweight concrete panel. Currently McInnes Construction is working on a beachfront home in Paraparaumu for A1 Homes. The two-storey architectural build spans close to 280 square metres and features four McInnes Construction bedrooms, a media room, double garage and two separate alfresco dining areas. Clad in James Hardie weatherboard, vertical Stria and Genia vertical timber, the project was begun in January and is set for completion later this year. “It’s quite an intricate build, lots of different junctions and corners to clad,” says Scott. This reputation for tackling challenging builds stems from the company’s approach to problem-solving and quality workmanship. Employing a core team of three builders and working with two to three contractors depending on project requirements, McInnes Construction has built its reputation on attention to detail and site presentation. The company’s expertise includes major renovations. Recent projects include a six-month renovation of a 1960s Paraparaumu home involving a complete internal gut, new roof, aluminium joinery, polished wooden floors and a master bedroom extension. Another complex project required installing a steel portal to support a second storey, creating an open alfresco dining area beneath. On projects like this our ability to figure out and solve problems quickly is key. You have to move fast and do things right,” explains Scott. “Our work comes mainly from word of mouth. Around half the work is from group home builders but we also do a couple of major renovations a year, which keeps us quite busy.” The company maintains high standards through weekly progress updates for clients, particularly useful for those unable to visit sites regularly. Combined with its commitment to maintaining clean, tidy worksites, this attention to client communication continues to reinforce its professional reputation. Bringing the personal touch call us when they need some help,” Livy says. The company has deliberately avoided the cookie-cutter approach adopted by many larger firms. “We take a bespoke approach to every project. We like looking after people and making sure they get what they want for a great price,” says Livy. “Kalvin likes to build challenging projects that give our clients what they’re looking for, and we like to deliver their forever homes, or that finished project they’ve been dreaming of.” A-Stage Construction’s current projects include boundary fencing for Freyberg High School in Palmerston North, horse stables and fencing work, and apartment interior updates. Recent projects completed include a challenging character home renovation and extension project that required careful integration of bespoke elements such as timber trims. The company has also undertaken substantial residential projects including a 215sqm two-storey property featuring underfloor heating, ducted heating systems, four bedrooms with two master ensuites and a high-end kitchen with stone bench tops. A licensed building practitioner, Kalvin has been in the industry since beginning his apprenticeship in 2011, and maintains handson involvement in all projects. The company has taken on an apprentice, who is learning all aspects of construction from foundation to completion. 1021 Tremaine Ave, PNth 06 3583232 PROUD TO BUILD WITH A-Stage Construction THE TILE DEPOT M A N A W A T U LATEST DESIGNS AND STYLES
