We are seeing an improvement in the market, and our business is ready to have the opportunity to be involved in delivering some of the critical projects that we see coming up.” Late 2021, HPM won a nationally competed tender for the project management of the new Te Whare Awhiora mental health and addictions facility at Gisborne Hospital, which opened in January. It was very satisfying for HPM to have won the tender against some large project management companies, Rodney says. The $31 million build presented some considerable logistical challenges “that really showed good character from the team to deliver it” in the wake of the Covid pandemic, in addition to cyclones Gabrielle and Hale, and some heavy rain events, Rodney says Beautifully designed and culturally attuned, it has 10 beds, five general ward rooms, three high-dependency rooms and two short-stay rooms, with Napier firm TW Construction being the main contractor. Te Whare means house and Awhi Ora, walk alongside support. Its design features a highly artistic, Maori-art-themed interior that includes carved timber pou (pillars), floating ceiling motifs and patterned wall panels and floor coverings in the high-walled lounge area. With extremely high energy efficiency and Core Green sustainability benchmarks, considerable work went into the design and specification of products, including solar panels covering most of its roof. The management of the project in relation to mitigating the risk of Covid being introduced to the hospital site by workers and others was absolutely vital, Rodney says. “All that adds complexity. It was something that we just had to adapt to, and it’s something that the whole project team, particularly TW Construction on-site should be credited with, the way it was handled.” Highlighting HPM’s broad skillset, its team has been project managing the refurbishment of the historic Heritage New Zealand Grade 1 listed former Women’s Rest building, built in 1924 in Clive Square in Napier. “It was a significant strengthening and restoration project for the new tenant, Art Deco Trust,” says Rodney. Although it is not a large-scale project, it is a significant building with strong community association and post-World War 1 commemorative, architectural and aesthetic value. “Grade 1 listed heritage projects are one of the toughest, to be honest. We are lucky enough to have Alexander Construction on it, as they are very experienced.
