32 | A supportive place for mothers and babies T T from page 30 TW Group: Mamia development REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT “That’s the heart of the building, and there’s a multi-purpose space off the other side of the kitchen, which can be opened up as a dining room, or if they want to have a meeting it can be closed up for a hui,” explains Isaac. “I saw gifting my time as a great way to give back to the community, and the strength of our business meant about 40 suppliers wanted to donate their time and materials to support getting Mamia built, free of charge, which is pretty impressive.” Mamia is now supported with 12 full- and part-time staff from a range of disciplines (including Aria’s husband Dr James Graham, who has a PhD in Education), many from a health background, as well as local kaumātua and a number of volunteers. A strength-based approach and maternal qualities are key. People come from all over to use the resources, and to connect with the support offered, whether it’s those with complex issues and needs, or those simply looking to find other mothers with young children to connect with. “We support people right across that spectrum of needs,” says Dr Aria. “It is a kaupapa Māori service, but it is inclusive of anybody who resonates with what we do, and whose values align, and I think that’s the draw. “We have many Pākeha, Chinese, French, South African, Pacifika with their babies. A lot of young mothers, including some very young mothers, but we get a really big mix including older mothers who might be having their third or fourth child.” Dr Aria is clear that the Mamia model focuses on finding gaps and opportunities guided by what family and community are saying about needs they have that aren’t being met. To meet those needs they innovate with different kaupapa, and bring in suitable people, or collaborate with others.
