Located at 167 Thorndon Quay, and featuring three procedure rooms, it complements the company’s existing Lower Hutt facility at 2 Connolly Street Lower Hutt, which opened seven years ago. Kate says the Wellington expansion is in response to soaring demand driven by the National Bowel Screening Programme, increased outsourcing to the private sector to reduce waitlists, and increased public awareness of bowel cancer. “Regular screenings are essential. Detecting cancer early – or identifying precancerous growths – significantly improves patient outcomes. This new clinic will continue to provide comprehensive digestive healthcare (gut and bowel) and faster access to services, improving outcomes for people in the wider Wellington and Lower North Island region,” Kate says. The clinic allows patients to potentially receive a colonoscopy within a week of referral if necessary; urgent patients are prioritised immediately. “If a patient is worried about having bowel cancer, this reduces the number of sleepless nights and provides immediate intervention. The clinic has also set up the ability to self-refer for a colonoscopy, preventing the need or wait to see a general practitioner (GP) before,” she says. The clinic’s medical team comprises specialists in gastroenterology and surgical fields with expertise in inflammatory bowel disease, bowel cancer, gastrointestinal bleeding and endoscopy. The physicians and surgeons work across both public and private hospitals, bringing extensive clinical experience. The Rutherford Clinic has also added a range of other clinical services to its facilities, and now offers specialists providing rheumatology, renal, and geriatrician outpatient clinics. Services offered include comprehensive bowel screening for bowel cancer detection, and colonoscopies for screening various conditions, including inflammatory bowel disease and irritable bowel syndrome. It also offers gastroscopies for diagnosing and treating symptoms like reflux, and diseases such as coeliac disease, and provides breath testing (which helps detect food intolerances to lactose and fructose), rectal bleeding clinics, haemorrhoid management and innovative capsule endoscopy where patients swallow a small capsule containing a video camera for non-invasive gastrointestinal tract examination. Kate says the clinic will offer an environment tailored for comfort, privacy and efficiency. Constructed to match the latest developments in medical design, and equipped with cutting-edge diagnostic and treatment technology, the clinic is setting new standards for gastroenterological services, she says. “Our mission is simple – to provide fast, expert care in a space that feels welcoming and efficient.
