HES Earthmoving T T Hugh de Lacy “Our philosophy is simple: choose the right machine for the job.” CONTRACTING To say that earthmoving is in Hayden Satherley’s blood would be an understatement: his is the third generation of the Satherley family to have operated successful earthmoving businesses in Hawke’s Bay. Like his father and his grandfather before him, Hayden started his own earthmoving company, HES Earthmoving, based at Takapau and with depots in Dannevirke, Waipukurau and Hastings. HES is a well-established, family-owned company with a team of 60 staff and a diverse range of plant operating throughout the Tararua and Hawke’s Bay regions. The plant comprises, among other things, 26 diggers, nine dozers, 21 loaders, 18 trucks and trailers, nine dump trucks, two transporters and eight tractors, plus four graders, a hydro seeder, three rock crushers and four aggregate screens. Hayden, together with his wife Myrtle, the company’s co-managing director, have never believed in a one-size-fits-all approach to machinery. “Our philosophy is simple: choose the right machine for the job,” Hayden says. As a result, HES runs equipment from leading brands such as Caterpillar, Komatsu and Volvo. “We always prioritise performance and operator preference,” he adds. “My grandfather, Jack Satherley, brought one of the first bulldozers into the Dannevirke area, a Caterpillar D2, in the late 1940s, not long after he returned from World War Two. “My father and mother, Malcolm and Kathy Satherley, later started up their own company, Rawhiti Earthmovers, and I worked for them straight out of school.” In 2007, Myrtle and Hayden established HES Earthmoving, with Myrtle playing a pivotal full-time role in managing the business while also raising the couple’s three children. The company was launched with just a scraper and an excavator, operated by Hayden on his own, but it didn’t stay small for long. From that starting point it was the classic steady expansion programme of pouring all available revenues into acquiring more machinery and taking on more employees to drive them, while building a reputation for quality work. The company also expanded rapidly into quarrying, producing the full range of hard rock and alluvial aggregates. It operates multiple quarries throughout Hawke’s Bay and environs, including at Waipukurau, Dannevirke, Oringi, Takapau and Pongaroa, plus the historic Pakipaki lime quarry, providing fertiliser, lime chip and rocks throughout the central North Island. Today, HES Earthmoving is a major player in the infrastructure industry in the central-eastern North Island, and especially so since Cyclone Gabrielle brought widespread destruction to the region in February 2023. At a single day’s notice, the company mobilised 14 staff, six excavators, three bulldozers and pumping equipment to move 200,000 cubic metres of river gravel and silt to repair the breeched stopbank at Fernhill and de-water the surrounding area.
